Wall panel question

Is it safe to run a speaker cable through a TRS jack on a wall panel? i.e. to have the amp head in the control room, and use the panel to go to the speaker cab in the iso booth?

Yes.

Unless the amp puts out 6 kilowatts...

I want to qualify that: usually.

Sometimes the sleave of the jack is grounded at the panel and sometimes there is a differential output on the amplifier. So, to be safe, use only the tip and ring connections and plug it into the panel before the amp.

i was going to say, "an unbalanced run that long might get noisy". then i thought about how noisy electric guitars are.

so now i'll say, "it'll be fine".

I used to use a standard speakon connector for this, simply so our 1/4 - 1/4 cabinet cables would not walk out the door. As I'm building the new studio I found a combo Speakon that will utilize these cables and is a combo jack which uses the center of the panel connector to accept a 1/4 mono for those clients who wish to use their own cables.
