College Student With Question

My roomate has an mbox pro 2 that he uses to record. I would like to use this to record also so I bought a 6pin to 4pin firewire converter. I was wondering if it is possible to use this interface with my computer without protools (he left the cd at home). Also I cannot just record on his computer because he leaves almost every weekend and I would like to record someone tonight or tomorrow. Thanks in advance.

Yes you can use the mbox with other DAWs (Logic, Cubase etc) but you need to install the audio drivers. They'll be on his discs, or you can download them from Digidesign - The Industry Leader in Digital Audio and Live Sound if you or he has an account (which he should have).

I installed the standalone 7.4 drivers and it still isn't working. I have the 4pin firewire connected securely and all other connections are great. Under my control panel it shows mbox 2 pro but when I click it says hardware not connected. Also the green light in the top corner is flashing, not solid like it is supposed to. I am running an inspiron 1525 also if that helps.

Perhaps contact M-Audio or DigiDesign tech support.

Good luck contacting Digi support, they're about as much help as a rotting apple when you're hungry...

Its my understanding that Pro Tools hardware can only be used with Pro Tools software, unless its M-Audio.

I've heard mixed discussions about 4 pin and 6 pin firewire types. In my personal experience with a 002r a 4 pin would not suffice.

You cannot use inputs on any Mbox product on a Windows computer for anything but ProTools software. That's that.

You can use inputs/outputs on M-Powered (M-Audio) hardware because it's acting as a standalone audio card. Obviously, this does not apply to Mbox2 Pro.

If your roommate has a legit version of ProToolsLE that came with his Mbox2 Pro, then he has it registered through Digidesign's site (with his Digi user account) and can download the webinstaller version of ProTools for Windows (and the serial code should be stored there too.) You don't need the disc.

Just go here:
My Digi

well, actually go here since they've moved servers:
https://account.avid.com/index.cfm?redsrc=fnddigiact

and go to "Your Products" and find ProTools LE and whatever version he has. Download access is there and the key/serial number is there. If there's no download link, but the serial number is there then keep logged in and search on Digi's site for his authourized version of PTLE + "web installer" and it'll allow you to download it.

Oh yeah, 4 pin firewire will work fine you just need to make sure the external power for the Mbox2 pro is plugged in.

Digidesign ASIO Driver for Windows XP

so these asio drivers are useless, and that's that?!

this may not be the latest copy of course...I just plugged "mbox asio" into google.

But please refrain from stating advice like this as fact unless you check it! doesn't help anyone.

I agree that the problem is probably a lack of power - 4 pin FW doesn't supply power.
