Sad Moments In Audio History

Young band being given a studio tour. Upon surveying the control room, a member excitedly marvels over the console. Grabs a fader and moves it up, just for the sensation.

Exclaims "It's like Pro Tools, but... in physical form!"

No joke.

You are now free to hang your head in shame.

How about this... Young band insists to help engineer in the vocal booth, and sets up a mic they know by themselves. Engineer, staying in the control room, then sets up the gain etc. and orders "take"... Vocalist begins to sing but suddenly gets all grumpy and starts a scene, complaining that the mic sounds terrible on his voice and demands a mic change. Upon hearing that strange but familiar sound, engineer rushes into the booth and twists the mic around, and gives young vocalist guy the wink... The mic was facing the wrong way...

That is so sad that the young ones here don't even know what their missing. It's like internet porn vs. having a real live partner... sad indeed!!!

happens every once in a while... i setup a side address mic for vocals and then the vocalist twists it so it's facing him... i then tell the vocalist not to touch any microphones... ever...

LOL

SS, my boy Isaac is 7 years old, I bought him "The Battle Of Britian" on DVD (it's an old WW2 movie)

Anyway the into scene is a couple of beautiful Spitfires swooping down out of the sky and over the camera man at a low level .... fantastic stuff.

My boy turns to me and says "Wow fantastic graphics dad"

I just hang my head.

Using samples instead of real instruments is much sadder, actually. And nobody comments on that anymore.dfegad

that's no "engineer" . . . . if he let's someone else set up the vocal mic or at least doesn't check to make sure it's set up properly before they do a "take". The vocal is 'semi' important. *smile*

When I was 18 I would have done anything to have pro tools at home in my bedroom. As it was, I occasionally had the opportunity to use studios (stand back, don't touch). I was stoked to see a four track tape machine.

Young guy sees pro tools before he sees a large desk. I don't think that's particularly sad.

No, but it kind of is sad if he doesn't in the end ever get to see/use an 'actual' desk....or experience the magic that used to be part of using one. See the Daniel Lanois interview thread........

False on so many levels. You can't just dismiss the whole history of sample based music.
Depends on the context at least.
I've often heard of people recording real strings or horns and processing/editng it to make it sound more like a sample.

Except this guy did just get to see a real desk. There is no less chance of any kid seeing a real desk. In fact if he enrolls onto one of these courses you hear about, he can spend 3 years all over a real desk.

Now that I think over the many years, I don't either, they are under lock and key every time they are not being used.
Other than my drum mics that stay in place at all times.

Is that like taking a photograph of a photograph and then when someone uses the photograph of the photograph without permission?

Man your case could go to the supreme Court. That's some serious legal philosophy to undertake.

not that side of sampling. The "buy the East west crappy strings and make a symphony" kind.....

Maybe, but whether that will constitute a magic situation is a whole other thing.....read the Daniel Lanois angle on this in the first paragraph:

Why are you hanging your head? Your 7 year old has a complex enough vocabulary to use words like "fantastic" when describing what he thinks are video game or computer generated graphics.

Must be a pretty incredible WWII film if he thought the "graphics" were that "fantastic".
