The 201 is my favorite mic for guitar cabs. The 57 never seems to capture the bottom end right and the top sounds ratty. The 201 is just better all around.

Try the Heil PR22. You can't go wrong with that choice. I prefer that over the i5, which is a great mic - but not a PR20/22.

I am also interested in the Beyer m201. I've tried a few mics on the snare- sm57, sm7, i5, 441, and beyer m88. The M88 is amazing if you want a nice, strong-rounded thwack of a hit. My only thing with that is I only let my in-house drummer use it because I can trust he won't ding the grill.... is the M201 at all similar in sound?

I tend to use the 201 a lot for top snare. It sounds good. The main things that put it over the top:

Footprint- Small and easy to position under a hat or between a rack tom.
Pattern- Very good rejection/ easy to isolate program
Build- Very well built. Direct hits from sticks aren't a problem.
Sound- Can handle super high SPL with clarity.

It's by no stretch of the imagination the best sounding mic for a snare drum, but it's other attributes pretty much make it a winner most of the time...

Really? I mean, not even close? I guess I was hoping it was more than a solid sound- have you used the M88 on snare before? What would you recommend sound-wise?

I think you're taking it a little out of context. I use a 201 quite a bit for snare. I just wanted to convey that I use it for a myriad of reasons. It's not a life changing sound. It is a really well built little dynamic mic that works well for top snare duties.

I don't think that I've used an M88 on snare. I could imagine, though. In my imagination, it would sound very good with a nice low end. It would be a little harder to position, the basket could get torn up from a direct hit, and it would have a little more side and rear bleed. Not bad things, necessarily. The plus to the M88 would be its versatility on other sources. I tend to like M88's on more things than the 201.

The m201 and m88 are, clearly, in the same family. However, the m88 has a big bottom end to it, and a rounder sound. I own both, but have never tried the m88 on snare -- will do that soon!

I think the m201, m69, and m88 all have that wonderful Beyerdynamic sound to them.
m201: clean and tight with a light transformer coloration
m69: clean and round with a light transformer coloration
m8: clear (not clean) and round with an extended bottom with heavy transformer coloration

All these adjectives are relative to these Beyer models.

Just for another idea, I like the sound of Audix D3 on snares and toms. Nice tight pattern, rich and accurate sound.

I use M201 on my own vocals. I have to be careful not to go off axis because of the polar patter but it's just right for my voice. Hardly needs any EQ at all, and better room rejection than a lot of mics.

The M201 is my favorite snare mic by far. Sounds huge and is great at negating hi-hat bleed. However, as mentioned above it isn't best on everything, but it is always my first go-to.

Old thread, so I don't mind piping in even if I'm not 100% on-topic. I have no experience with the i5, but the m201 has recently become my first-try mic for everything. The pattern is pretty tight on it, so I also tend to mic a little further away with it because the sound changes so radically when close micing. Because the off-axis rejection is so good, it also tends to sound tighter when further out than a lot of wider pattern mics.

ive been moving to the m201 a lot more for snare recently, though i find that i need to position it differently to get a better sound (then the audix, or 57)...

about 4-6 inches off the shell pointed to center of the shell, nice tight crack, with good 'm201' depth

also slide a little closer to the kick and you get a sweet kick/snare in 1 mic sound
