mics for the EL84 chime

I'm using a UA M610 pre for recording a Genz Benz Black Pearl, which has that EL84 chime and all the distortion characteristics that come with it...

I've tried the 57' (to nasally), Senn 421 (not really right), and an audix D3 (kinda bland).

So, what mics have you had success recording the EL84 chime? Or, what techniques have you used? I'm using a mytek 192ADC, so everything is captured accurately, which seems to the problem.....

I personally like the sm57.... I also like the SM7...

If you're looking for something different than that though... I've had great success with the Audix i-5 as well...

Many people like it better on certain amps than the sm57...

Never tried the D3, so I'm unsure how it compares...
So far, the i-5 is the only mic made by Audix that I considered worth purchasing...

I might catch a little flak for that... as some people really dig Audix mics..
I prefer Shure and beyerdynamic mics as far as dynamics go.. .

414, U87, SP B1, baby bottle, mouse. 57 should also be fine though. Try it an inch away from the grill, by the outside edge aimed to where the dust cap and paper meet. You will get the lows and the highs, not just the mid honk.

Any small diaphragm condenser in a cranked up pre should do the trick.
The thing is to aim the mic at the tube, tap it carefully to get a nice "chime", and of course, no guitar playing at all during recording.

441 is good slightly off axis, beta 57 worhs well and 406, the old ones are also a winner. But the sm 57 should give you some descent result anyway. Keep on trying with different setups
