Am I missing anything in a mic pre?

Hear me out here. I've got an FMR RNP and the pres on a FF800. I'm always on the hunt to upgrade my hardware, possibly plugins, but something I've realized lately is that I haven't even considered preamps. I'm thinking the reason why is because I'm actually satisfied with them! It's kind of like my VLA-II. It isn't a top notch piece of gear, but it gets the job done, and I think it's more about what you put into it than anything. Will it make THAT much of a difference?

At this point I think I'll hold off until I have a seriously great studio for a killer mic pre, but I wanted to check with all of you to see if there's something I'm really missing out on.

if you're happy with the sound, save your money. Get new gear when you're trying to get a sound you can't get with what you have.

Never understood the preamp madness myself, I guess that makes two of us.

Yeah, I've gotten more out of my gear by spending time learning how to use it than spending cash getting new gear

The RNP is a solid mic pre, but I think every studio should have one kick ass mic pre. A good high end mic pre will give your recordings a bit more depth and detail that will add up over multiple tracks.
