stand alone workstations - any good?

I'm now considering a Roland VS2480 or something similar, just for the all in one solution and to get away from the computer. Not much talk on these workstations, so I may be throwing a bone to the dogs so they can begin howling about how bad these are.....

If you incorporate external AD/DA and use high end outboard, you should be able to get usuable or good recordings I'd imagine...

or not?

Definitely not the Rolands. Here are my takes on the issue, getting far better than "usable recordings" with the Akai DPS24:
