Cleaner mixes?

When I listen to my mixes
I think they sound good but then i compare them and they appear almost more dirtier sounding
I dont know is that the right term but all the commerical stuff sounds more clean and in line
Is there anything like freqs that tend to be cut in modern sounding music?

don't know what you mean by clean but the trend is that everything from 200 to 500Hz tends to be cut big time, nothing fancy thought just find where the mud is and nock it down with a parametric eq. Add some hi passing to clean the low end rumble and you should be almost there (some instruments like bass and electric guitar will most likely need a hi cut filter too)

The dirtiness you experience could be the result of the build-up of noise in your recorded tracks.

Modern commercial recordings typically start out very (too?) cleanly with highly transparent amp/ADC stages and treated rooms, etc.

I don't know how you're doing your mixes, but nearly ever tutorial on mixing I've watched or read talks about cleaning up the tracks of noise and extraneous sounds before the mixing begins.

It could have a lot to do with your conversion. What kind of gear are you using? What are you mixing down to?

My Mixes improved a hell of alot as i always wanted that bigger clearer sound.
1st step was to get otb and mix through a console. This instantly got rid of the phase issues you get from itb.
2nd step was to strap a mastering grade comp and eq on the back end. This glues and makes the mix stand up.

Which commercial recordings are you referring to? I can think of Steely Dan's Aja or Gaucho being sparkly clean (or dry and sterile, depending on your perspective) and on the other end something like Cream's Crossroads being dirty (or organic and with attitude, again you perspective).
