Yeah, and I don't mean with sandwiches and fruit cups. I am about to order a BAE empty 6-slot lunch box. There are so many choices in the API form factor range that it is getting hard to decide what to pop in there. So far I am thinking 2 shadow Hills Gama modules for mic pres, and API 550b EQ's. The Avedis E15 EQ is an option that I am very curious about. Maybe better than the 550b??? Decisions decisions.

please remember, I'm not a pro and i'm only going on internet hype. but i would get:

1 BAE pre
1 OSA L3 pre
1 Purple Biz pre
1 BAE EQ
1 OSA LA4 type comp (when it comes out)
1 API comp

of course there is the new shadow hill pre and a some new OSA stuff coming soon, so my list will probably change.

btw i can't afford any of it so I'm just dreaming.

I like the 560 real well. I dunno if people feel that graphical eq isn't as sexy as parametric or semi-parametric, but to my ear it's a great-sounding box.

If it were my Superfriends plastic lunch box, a nice Italian grinder or pastrami on rye.

If an API 500, I'd go for half Purple Biz mic pres, half Shadow Hills GAMA mic pres, and leave one or two spaces for an API 525 compressor(s).

Then in my second rack I'd add some API eq's! And more mic pres. Some API mic pres for (punchy) toms and kick in the second rack would be nice too.

Kinda depends what you need the box for..If you are a tracking joint get a pair of 512's a pair of 550A's and a pair of 560's

if you're a mixing joint get a pair of 550a's 560's and 550bs

560's

There are a bunch of pre's that will fit in those, but there is only one 560 EQ, best damn equalizer to ever meet a drum, or a vocal.

Tracking joint. I am using 4 ch of UA 2108 for drums right now, and I want another 2 ch if I can find a used one. Those pres kill on drums. I have a TG-2, and some Telefunken V676a pres as well so I am lokking for something to complement what I have and am pretty sold on 2 Shadow Hills pres and am up in the air on the EQ part of things. I have only 2 ch of EQ right now, and they are ANT W695b modules. Pretty clean so something with a bit of vibe to it would be cool. How are the API compresor modules? I only have a 2-1176 and a distressor so I could use another flavour. Are the API comps good on the drum buss? Thanks for the info so far guys, even the food remarks. fuuck Now I'm hungry.

The 560's are the eq's for tracking. I think....
They absolutely KILL on drums.
The compressors are great too. I mean, they've got the API opamps in them, right? But, I'd grab a pair of the 560s if I was in your shoes.

It would depend on what I had allready.

Those Gama pre's look quite inviting though....

I also like 550's and 560's for some things. Avedis made an EQ? I'll bet it sounds good...he does great work

I guess A-Designs is doing their Pacifica (see new product alert) in an API form factor as well. Damn, this keeps getting harder to decide.

better get a bigger lunch box

well so far you've mentioned:

Api, Shadow Hills, Purple, Osa, Pacifica, BAE

so you better get an 11 space box is all I can think,
there's just too many choices!

but I myself would get 4 512 and 2 525

but maybe I need to start eq'ing when I track?

Me too! I'd know exactly what to do with the 2extra slots I have in my lunchbox!
2 512c's 1 550b 1 525 and 2 500series distressors!

I could be heresay, but I recall someone mentioning this in one of the Tonelux threads. There was a hint or two dropped. Maybe I was just too I do know that in my lunch box, there will be 2 Shadow Hills GAMA pres in there for sure, and possibly 4 ch of EQ.

I thought the dropped hints referred to an ELI product fitting the Tonelux modular console concept, not the 500-series lunchbox formfactor - but there was also mention made of Tonelux making a 500-series adapter for their modules, so who the hell knows...

All I know is that I'm getting an API lunch box, 512c, and 560 next week and I have a sneaking suspicion that every $600 chunk that comes in after that will immediately evaporate and magically transform into something I can stuff in my lunchbox.

Thanks Chris, that is it. It was the Tonelux to API 500 series adapter I was trying to think of. Too many new products and it gets a bit confusing.

Just got an 11 space OSA rack and 2 MP1-C's. Looking forward to filling it in...I think I'm going to get a pair of The Biz (bizzes?) next.

What compressors are available for the 500 format? There's the 525, and the OSA thing...anything else?

That's what I was thinking.

I'm all about pairs these days. Rack space is disappearing double time.
I'm looking to replace my lunch with a 10 space. (Maybe I'll keep both)
It's all API pre's and eq's. Yeah, boring, I know. Missionary's my fav too....

You mentioned your shy on some EQ.
How about 2-560, 2-550, and 2 pres.
I can't suggest any pre's.
Way too many out there.
I can say... I like my 512c's...

I like all of you am trying to figure this out i have a lonely BAE 312 in a 11 space OSA but have
like two 11 space racks filled in my mind if i can remeber what their filled with thus here is the list .ive only heard some of these pre's, nevertheless to make it cooler i have placed minimal comments about each peice from websites of manufacturers or word of mouth or from what ive heard as always HEARING is King , anyway........

ok here it is , correct me if i'am wrong but i've heard of the following for 500 series:

made:

pre's:
api 512c "classic coke"

shadow hills gama mono with switchable nickel & steel transformers and also to tranformerless. damnnnnn

a designs p1 “Quad Eight Sound” or neve meets api.

a desiigns em silver steel x former "darker sound than the P-1, EM-Red, and EM-Blue."

a designs em blue “Nickel” x former "airy top-end-ish tone"

a designs em red "Up Front Mids”! 50/50 output transformer different input x-former then others.

osa mp1-a clean open all arounder

osa mp1-c punchy more 312ish

osa mp1-L Lundahl 1538XL input transformer

osa mp1-L3 lundahl LL7903 input transformer.

(All osa's come with adjustable output i believe which is great for driving pre hard but not clipping recorder also trs +4 line level on each card is cool)

bae 312a punchy forward avedis 1122 opamp pad polarity phantom power

purple audio biz mic pre
" Pressing the "Dual" switch splits the gain between two of our Class A opamps, enabling up to 75 dBu of clean gain",
or single mode and has output control for tonal variations cool
not yet but in the works :
The Biz is the first of five modules planned for the "500" form factor. !!!!!!

in the works:

tonelux mp1 with tilt eq control for tone(made but with coming tonelux adapter will work in 500 seires)

john hardy m1!
and twin servo versions for 500!!!!!

compressors:

api 525 classic"

buzz audio essence 2 space with side chain

in the works:

osa vca on the sooner

osa opto on the later

eq's:

api 550's 560's

in the works:

bae avedis e15

speck eq 500

daking eq 500

a designs pultec -ish solid state eq

anyhthing else?

Whoa, old thread. I forgot I even started this one. I ended up getting some Shadow Hills GAMA pres to put in my Averill rack and with the testing I have done on them, I really like them so far and the tranny switching option is the dog's balls. Very noticeable differences between the 3 settings. When I used them on overheads a few days ago, I basically had to flip a quarter to decide which setting to go with since all 3 sounded really good.

As far as EQ choices, I'm going to go with a pair of API 550b or wait until the Daking EQ is released.

There are almost too many choices for this format these days and it can make decision making a diffuicult thing.

This lunch box craze has got to be the most exciting thing since, since LUNCH BOXES!

If I could start over again I would open Lunch Box studios, made up with only lunch box modules - and only record sandwiches..

THINK OF THE BREAD!
