Is using DSM cheating?

I just got the demo - it almost make me sound like I know what I'm doing. It's like an instant suck-remover.

The demo needs to come with a stronger warning

There are no cheats in audio engineering.

There is no magic "sound good" button.

You either have the skill or you don't....

except with the DSM. The magic "sound good" button is called "capture."

In all seriousness, you always need skill to make it sound good, but great gear makes it difficult for you to sound bad. Some wonderful designer used his skill to scale down the room for bad results. I think Paul Frindle has gone one better. It doesn't just make you sound like you know what you're doing, it actually helps you know what you're doing. Working with DSM is minor education in mix manipulation.

So you may begin cheating, but end up with more real skill. A bargain for 300 bucks to my mind.

remember this one:

Steinberg's FreeFilter was an early curve-stealing/EQ program. Its sound quality is lacking by today's standards, but its functionality set the paradigm for this type of software.

Freefilter was EQ based and not very good.
'Complete crap' would be a better description.

DSM is about compression relative to frequency, like an unlimited multiband equaliser. The closest equivalent is Voxengo's Soniformer, but that's more manual in form and nowhere near as quick to use.

I remember FreeFilter. Used to use it all the time on sampling sessions.

DSM is definitely not cheating. i never feel like i need to use it to make my mixes sound better, but i do prefer to - it's a lot gentler than other plugs out there (IMO) and once you get the hang of it it's an amazing tool. GET IT!!!!!

I have tried the demo and DSM In my eyes is the ultimate compressor since it does not operate in "traditional" real time.
You can run vocals, bass, guitars and it will always come out natural.

Soooo, is it in stores? Must we buy it from a website that doesn't mention US Dollars and doesn't even say where its located...?

Looks interesting but needs to be a real product in a real store, not just a download from some mystery place...

I will take my copy, burn it on a CD and put it in a nice custom made box. Then I will sell it to my local Guitar Center where they will mark it up 100%. You can buy it there for the bargain price of $600. I will then take the cash and buy 2 licenses, one for me and one to give as a Christmas present. Sound good?

Paul Frindle is absolutely trustworthy, don't worry. It's a small operation but the man behind it designed SSL stuff back in the day and was also instrumental in some of Sony Oxford's (now Sonnox) finest DSP as well. DSM is worth every penny, believe me.

I will be getting this plug for sure, I just wonder why the site doesn't mention where they are based out of. The plug sound like it will be nice though.

I guess they reckon there are very few countries that use the £ as their currency and you can pretty much deduce it from that.

I bought this plugin 2 month ago.

I'm just AMAZED by the versality and the new approach of this unit.
And it's still a mystery...how to use at its best. No rules..

This "multiband compressor and very good one way limiter plus eq and cloning" is a brand new thing.
It's also quite mysterious with the HF rel slider , LF att and the eq section reacts in a very unusual way .... and most of the preset come with release time like 5 or 6 seconds.
But it's just stunning on individual tracks and on the mix. Just tweak the sliders untill satisfaction and capture a lot of sources, you'll get surprises!

I work in music mixing since 20 years.
It's the only plugin that impressed me as much as a hardware distressor or a pultec.... or a A820 studer.

A new classic.

A long learning curve of course because it's a whole new world to discover.

But shhhht

Still a secret....

Please don't talk about it anymore tutttutttutttutttutttutttutt

So would the "capture" button allow you to clone, for example, the sound of your favourite kick drum and apply that eq curve to a different kick?

Cheating! If so, then recording in general is cheating and we should only play live
I've started saving for DSM already - Paul Frindle is a legend and seems like a lovely guy as well. This is great value! Just don't tell anyone else or we'll all sound better at once

The limit of how likely he is to consider this approaches infinity as x ---> -1

So...

Am I the only one who thinks this thing has a noticeable sound to it? I even thought the demo on the website had a "digital" sort of sound to it. The filters, perhaps? It bugged me enough that I wasn't inspired to purchase it.

I have a feeling I'm going to be in a vast minority on this one.

For what it's worth, I love the Sony Oxford stuff and Paul Frindle's writings–he seems like an excellent guy.

To the original question: no, it's not cheating; it's just another tool, which is valid.

Yes. I can hear this on some things too. But it is so good on drums that I'm still thinking about getting it just for that. I also want to play around with capturing stuff on my own. So far I'm just using the presets. To me, it sounds somewhat like the Sonnox stuff in terms of general sound quality. I think I'd end up using it as a fixer plug-in on stuff that needs this special approach.

This plugin is incredible. Theres a LOT going on that you can't control, but if you go with it and get into how it works, its just an irreplaceable tool.

I know what you mean across the whole mix but as parallel compression this thing is unbelievable!

I'm looking into this. I don't know much about it other than it's some kind of magic, multiband compressor that makes our mixes sound better. Is this the 'glue' that we've been after ITB?
