mixerless system/outboard integration?

Ive finally decided on my new system and need to ask if there is a box around that will enable me to incorporate outboard into my new system. As my rosetta 200 only has 2 inputs i'm wondering if there is a box around that will allow me to monitor my outboard reverbs and compressors and give me a volume control for my monitors as well. This box has to be great quality and not degrade the signal path if at all possible!

The system will be

Powermac G5 running logic 7
Rosetta 200 192k with x firewire option
Mackie Hr824's
Amek CIb
Lexicon Pcm60
Dbx 160's
Avalon U5

Cheers.

Monitor your reverbs and compressors in what way?

Sounds like you are asking for an I/O interface of sorts? There are many.

But if you only have a pair of I/O's you may consider an interface with more options...the Rosetta is great front and back end conversion...but I would skip the FW option if you plan on using outboard gear.

For monitoring solution...what is your budget?

I am using the Central Station and it is totally usable with remote for just under $700...(good for my mixerless setup) for higher end the Crane Song Avocet is the shinizzle from the few folks I know using them.

P&B,

Hi Rodney, heres my signal path on way in. Sorry wasnt that clear with my first post.

Amek cib>rosetta>firewire>mac

I need the firwire option otherwise i can't get audio into my computer. Whats the alternative? The rosetta 200 is right at the top of my budget and i can't afford any more ins at that quality.

signal path on way out mac>firewire>rosetta.............................hr824's

I need a device i can insert between the rosettas main outs and my monitors, to allow me to connect the speakers and have a main volume control. I'll def check out the presonus, although some reviews have said it clouds the sound somewhat.

With regard to my main reverb (pcm 60) i want to be able to hear the reverb as i monitor and record it back in to the computer before i bounce the mix to disk.I may also put a cd recorder on the end of the chain rather than bounce but want to have little in the chain as possible.

Hope that makes sense.

Dan

Sounds to me like you need a Lynx AES-16 and a Lynx Aurora 16. That'll give you 16 channels of A/D and D/A and won't break the bank.

How do the lynx's compare to the apogee's? I'd rather have just 2 channels if the apogee's sound better.

Surely an aurora 8 with firewire card would be a better bet than a pci card and and aurora 16.Besides which my budget won't stretch that far.

Yeah, it's called a console LOL

If you want to be able to mix with outboard that's in the analog domain (like your PCM60 and 160's) then you need more channels of I/O and it needs to be simultaneous, meaning capable of doing input and output at the same time. A control room center section for monitors, 2-tracks and talkback is a whole other piece of equipment.

The Presonus isn't bad...it's not like a $2K Dangerous monitor or anything but you could do much worse. You should connect that (or something like it) to your monitors rather then the Rosetta.

All you need to make a record is a mic, some tape and maybe some bad reverb...
