Recording Process with Jay Messina Ep3

I'm realizing only a gearslut would get these vids, so here's another.

They didn't show it, but he does this thing where he has a 57 on top of the snare, another on the bottom and then a 414 across the top...never seen it, but he's a master.

Also, he had the U87s he talks about, the room mics, in figure 8.

Just little tips for anyone who cares...

I had the magnificent pleasure of having Jay as an instructor out here in the Bay Area for a few weeks and even more awesome, the chance to act as his assistant on a few sessions. He's an absolutely amazing man and engineer. His attitude and attention to detail is unparalleled. Just a great guy overall.
Got to see him again at the API party in New York for this last weekend's AES. Definitely one of my highlights!

These are great vids. I love this dude.

That's awesome Brad.

He is such a good, nice and sweet guy. (I need a thesaurus to really expand on that, but when you meet someone like Jay, it's just a pleasure through and through to hang with him).

It's no wonder he has gotten so many great gigs. He gets great sounds AND is a talented yet humble guy who has nothing to prove.

I think that's one of the things not really talked about too much on Gearslutz: the idea that when people like you, you get a shot at getting the gig. I think there are a lot of people who know how to get sounds, but VIBE is SO important.

That was Jay's MO that day...make the band feel comfortable.
