turning a 87 into a 67

Hey Oliver, I saw your posts in the other thread and I would like to hear more about the 87 conversion.

First of all, I never really liked 87's but I love 67's. How close does this transformer change get to an original 67?

Do you recommend vintage 87's or Ai's?

Do you do the conversion or just sell the transformers? How much $$$?

Any additional info that you feel like supplying would be great.

Thanks, Paul

Hello Paul,

we started making a BV12 in 1999 for a german vintage dealer that got somehow an entire box of M269 parts but without x-formers. Since that time we offer the BV8 as an replacement and DIY off the shelf item. To be precise we make an identical to Neumann blueprint version and an upgrade if you want to get a softer feedback/EQ point and better low end.

Sorry we only offer the x-former and in the past I help some customers with the needed circuit boards. But let me point out that this is not a DIY project a la modifying a china mic. Only a seasoned and experienced tech should attempt this project.
It does not matter what U87 you choose, it would be nice to get one with a 7 or three pin Tuchel connector, so that it looks right. If you only have the XLR bottom bell, making a new one should not be a big deal or just use a multi pin XLR.

The cost of the conversion depends on your technical knowledge, if you can not do it yourself, do not try because you will end up paying more than a Neumann assembled U67 will cost you.
If you have the expertise you will spend about $1k in parts and that's includes a PSU, if you pay someone you probably have to come up with an additional grand for the time.

Hope that answers some of your questions.

Best regards,

Oliver
