| consoles So i have a humble facility with a digi 002 and a pretty nice selection of pres and eq's but my console is a Yamaha O2R and is useless to me these days..I have a chance to put in a SoundCraft AUTO, it's a discontinued mode.lMy friend said I could have it cuz he hasn't used it in years. I'm thinking of selling the O2R and buying some good converters and summing via the soundcraft. Sound smart? Would this be a step in the right direction? some outboard that I have Manley dual mono pre's API512s BAE 312's DAN ALexander dual class A Preamp Summit TLA 100 DBX 160's API 550A API 560 |

Lets see i can die by getting my head blown off or by getting burned in a fire... ...how about neither? There are better options out there right now man. People nowadays don't know how lucky they are. ![]()

Hey Thrill, So if these were your only options to sum OTB would you just stay ITB? What would you recommend for an analog summing solution?

I feel that all the solutions out there are great. Its really a matter of what you can afford and the features you can't live without. I personally have to have a large console for mixing. I like the feeling of driving an 18 wheeler or a tank. Basically anybody gets in my way gets crushed. I like the feeling of sliding up and down the console or the rush you get when you stand up and turn EQ's when vibing on the bigs. Its also gets the clients amped up when they sit in front of all the buttons. Sorta the wow when the stewardess brings you into the cockpit. But some guys prefer more simple and minimalistic solutions. You know a Porsche,Ferrari or a hi end 10 speed. Even though i've never used it i like the look of Geoff Tanners mixer and the Tonelux thing looks cool for something small. On a bigger scale the Daking console and the AWS 900 are good choices. My ultimate preference though would be a SSL9000K or the new Neve but we can dream can't we? And i would stay in the box for certain styles and for others not a chance.

| thanks Thrill, Roger that. The Daking looks bitching..I'm just biding my time right now. I'm gonna eventually have to get a real console for the type of music I do. Prolly just get into a Trident when I get the courage, or the money whichever comes first. Quote:

| One with big hooves | What's wrong with your 02R? Ok, they're a little old but it's not like those 10 year old caps are really affecting the sound and reliability of the thing. I’ve never used a Soundcraft ‘Auto’ (are you sure the model is ‘Auto’ and it’s not just an automated desk?) but some of their desks like the TS-12 are pretty respectable IMHO. Not quite in the big leagues…but minor league MVP. I’d pick either desk over mixing ITB, but I really don’t like mixing ITB. Nothing really beats the speed and flexibility of mixing on a real console with real outboard, not to mention there’s generally more depth and dimension to the tone. But really, it’s a whole different workflow and that’s key for me. Mixing entirely ITB takes so much longer it’s not even funny.
