Radial Pro DI - Your thoughts? (Decent transformer, only $79?)

Ok, this thing has been out for a little while now. Any thoughts on it? Anyone heard it?

According to the product lit, they knew a Jensen tran would sound best - but couldn't make that work at this price point. So they had an "almost as good" trannie custom made (probably overseas?). Hence the 'lower' price.

I'm tempted... need some general purpose DIs for acoustic guitar pickups and the like.

I did a shoot out on this box, the Jensen one and the Active box.

This box isn't quite as good as the Jensen or Active, BUT, it kicks the shit out of any of the other units, stewart, countryman, etc. IMO All the Radial stuff seems quality build and really does something that makes a difference.

BTW, I bought the Jensen.

They are good boxes. The JDI is their Jensen box, and will net you a cleaner overall sound, but the ProDI is still very good. Yes, it was built to a price point but they have the upper line stuff if you got the dough so it's all good.

Yeah, that's the general impression I had of this unit.

Think I'll pick up a couple and put them through the paces. At the point I'm at, gearwise, I'm having a hard time justifying paying for that extra couple inches of perfectionism over just buying a simple, reliable workhorse DI.

Frankly, I'd rather put the big money towards a killer vintage piano. Don't get me wrong; my DIs should work, and work quite well. But DI's don't give me butterflies when I slap down my Visa. Everytime I get a new one, it kind of feels like I'm buying a three-prong adaptor or something.

It ain't the JDI but it's pretty damn good. Most folks won't notice the difference.

I bought the JDI, Jensen unit , mostly for guitar, and if you are recording, I would highly recommend auditioning the JDI, it sounds so good, that it makes a very nice difference, especially if you do lots of doubling or use with a variety of instruments. It makes digital keyboards sound warmer and fat too and if you aren't locked into recording keys in stereo, it can take both inputs and sum to output in mono.

On the other hand, if ur just getting an instrument into a mixer for live performance, the ProDI is a great choice and as stated; kicks the pants off the competition. No slouch in recording; quiet, robust and built like a tank.

Yeah, it's sounding like these are an eminently robust and usable choice.

Kind of a big deal at that price point. Nothing else seems usable to me under $100. Under $150 even.

Can't ask for more than that. Just ordered two, sight unseen (sound unheard?).

I have the "Duplex". I love it! My only issue...( well not really an issue ) is that by it being passive, it requires more gain on the pre behind it. Creates some noise but still sounds good! Pre-amp is the Presonus Digi-max LT. Anyone used this DI with a really "high-end" pre? Would using a "hi-end" pre change the need for extra gain I'm using now? Love the DI though.!..
