Been there, done that. Did not get a T-shirt!

Damn, and I thought my day job was dfegad awful.

There are few things worse than feeling like your the only person around you who understands what is fundamentally wrong with the situation, or even worse, just the only one who cares.

Interested in the documentation subplot . . .

I posed this question to the singer, and he kept repeating the question as-if attempting to decipher the answer to some complex, deep philosophical question. “Yes, why WOULD a ****** act like a ******?” “Why would a ******, act like a ******?” "Why would a ******, ACT like a ******?"
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This brought tears to my eyes!

Excellent!

Mixerman's saga sure has been addictive reading. Whenever I get tired of working alone, I should read it again!

So alphajerk, is this where you post when the MusicPlayer forums are down?

Jules, did you ever consider starting an "Open Mic" forum at this site?

I am half joking. This is clearly a circus show. You can't blame Willie, the ringmaster, for wanting to make a grand entrance.. Besides I work exclusively as a producer so I look at things from that perspective. On a few occasions where a label has dragged its feet in relation to a deal memo and agreeing fees & royalties, I have myself, had a lawyer warning me that I may have to pull a now show or stoppage of recording till the situation is rectified. I have passed this on personally to managers of artists reminding them, if they dont kick some serious ass at the label to get my shit sorted out, there will be no session.. - It by and large works and the managers respect, not hate you for it in the end.

All the comments that the producer job is to 'sort all this out in advance' are all very mistaken indeed and dont take in to account the dreaded Business Affairs dept of a record company who specialize in delay. These are lawyers that aren't freelance they are bored in their corporate jobs, all they have to do is be nasty on behalf of their company on a full time basis. Losing your agreement down the back of a filing cabinet for a week or so is a standard trick...

As for someone like Tom Dowd, with a relationship like he had with label heads I dont doubt 'my word is my bond' deals would go down daily without hitch. But in the case MM describes it is clearly a moron circus, and in that case I wouldn't want a handshake deal with morons... Would you?

Full marks then to Willi for standing his ground.. after all what has been the negative impact of his actions? They are all set up. MM has had time to fine tweak his set up and get to know the band, and everybody gets a nice week end off.. Big deal!

When working on productions I sometimes come in late delegating jobs to an engineers to do in the mornings, sometimes naive studio receptionists look at their watches as I arrive a few hours after the band and engineering team and shake their heads, tut tutting that I am somehow "late".

They just dont get it...

Delegation.

It's good to be the king!

"if this guy is the large flavor that MM alludes he is... this shit would have been buttoned up a long time ago."

I disagree and explain why above... You asume that everyone involved in prepararation of agreements has speed in mind. I belive this to be falce

"I think the producer renegotiated the agreement on the day of the session for something more. "

This my friend, is assumption, so I cant hang with you there...

"Who is working for who?"

It's an insane mess, that's clear. Logical thought allmost certainly can't be applied to this absurd situation, for that very reason MM knows it is entertaining and it is very kind of him to let us enter these sessions for a look. This IS the Music Biz.

As a friend said to me on my way to LA for the first time "treat it like you are in some sort of cartoon, and everything will be fine"!

BTW Scooby Doo and Shaggy think Lance Nephew is the one that kidnapped the professor!

I agree it's important to stand your ground but I do think Willi should have come clean with Mixerman about exactly what was going down even at the risk of MM bailing.

Just read Monday nights posting...

It gets better and better!

I think Mixerman is going to have to deal with his Alishad phobia!

Why is that? He's already been asked to cut a drumtake using a razorblade.

That might be a hell of a lot of razor to get a take out of Cotton. Digital has some advantage on anything that extensive. If this is going to be the norm on the whole album (likely unless they fire Cotton), cutting tape is going to get old fast. I haven't used Radar, but I imagine it'll beat tape editing w/o the sonic problems (real or perceived, I don't care) of Alsihad.

Did you know that on Mettalica's black album, all the drums were edited using a razorblade. There were so many edits, everyone was crossing their fingers when they did the transfer to a 3348.

That's weird, cos Lars doesn't suck. Makes me wonder what they had to do for "... And Justic For All" which is a lot more rhytmically complicated, and interesting... and rocking.

Everytime I ever saw Metallica (I never saw them after And Justice...) Lars effed up at least once. Makes me wonder how many razor blades have been dulled in the studio.

If that story is true probably a bunch. When editing tape I'll use a blade for maybe 8 or 9 cuts on each side before I toss it. When I'm putting in leader tape I'll use it until it won't make it through in one pass anymore.
