"Harvest moon" Neil Young info??

Hi There. I absolutely love the vibe of this record. It is so raw and beautiful sounding. Does anyone here have any information about how it was recorded?? I'd very much like to emulate it. Thanks heaps.

I`ve got no info but that`s by far my favorite Neil Young album.

From Hank to Hendrix in particular just seems like one of the best tunes ever written to me. Simple sounding but absolutely perfect arrangements to these tunes.

I also love how this album was a return to his more acoustical stuff like the original Harvest. The whole thing just seems to have this sad nostalgia about it that hit home even when I was a 18 year old kid.

I`m into some of his more rocking stuff as well but I really think he shows his true musical gift with these type of songs.

I don`t think I`ve heard the whole CD since way back than so thanks for bringing it up. I`m going to go buy the album tomorrow.

I hope somebody else has your info for you though...

i like the record alot
i found the cd

produced by ben keith and neil young

recorded and mixed at redwood digital
woodside, california

engineered by tim mulligan and john nowland
assistant: john hausmann
mixed by neil young, john nowland
and tim mulligan

i'd guess its one of those fancy sony 3324 or 3348 machines because it's
digital, but pre pro-tools frenzy
adat time - i doubt neil rolled on
the adats.....

some great songs

my favourite is still side 2 of "on the beach"

be well

Doesn't Neil record a lot of his more recent stuff in a big, open barn - live, old-school style? There's a picture on one of his recent-ish albums of the band set-up there (great shot).

i have heard that the brushes rhythm in the song *harvest moon* is actually a recording of the drummer sweeping the floor with a straw broom. don't know if it's true but it's pretty cool!
that's all the info i have on the album harvest moon

Theres a thanks to Klaus Heyne in the cover.
That might say something about microphones being atleast not randomly used for this record.

Yeah there was a live performance circuilating on TV (unplugged maybe ? Not sure) and there was a guy who played the broom. The funny thing was he was dead serious about it and he appeared to have a special mat made just for that purpose. I don`t know if broom players typically bring their own mat but talking to my friend who originally got me into him this sort of thing is right up Neils alley.

He also brought out a crazy looking pipe organ and did a solo version of Hey Hey My MY. (If I remember correctly) Too cool.

Interesting that this album was recorded digitally. Just another example of a great full sounding recording that I would never guess is digital. Same with Brothers in Arms.

Here's an article on the recording of the song "Heart of Gold".

That was unplugged, and the serious broom player was Larry Cragg, Neil's guitar tech.

Larry is a GREAT tech and he also rents out an incredible selection of vintage guitar gear- Vintage Instrument Rental
