Thread Starter | Looking for decent small monitors
i'm somewhat limited in space and i'm looking for monitors that are about 5" in cone size. 6.5" is definitely too large but at or less than 5" would be acceptable if there is something out there. i've been doing some searching, but now i'm at a dead end. i already have event 20/20bas...they are no ADAMs but i like them. i do all my own music that is similar to say john mayer or dave mathews. so a project price would be ideal (several hundered dollars), but i'm a fellow slut and i have been known to splurge on multi thousand purchases on too many occasions. so i'm interested in budget since i also need to buy more gear (GAS), but i really would like to know the cream of the crop too. Should i only be interested in monitors that can be expandible with a sub later??? i'm really not interested in good bass reproduction from these monitors obviously due to the small size. i've been researching: Genelec 8020A, KRK RP5, Yamaha MSP5 any other suggestions that i should be looking into? prefer actives. thanks Jeff |

KRK V4's good alright! Haven't heard the others except for the bigger RP8's. They sound like junk compared to the KRK V-range... hyped, overly bright and brittle and very ear fatiguing. I'm not sure if any of those are really high end though... |

Dynaudio has a new compact version of the BM5A coming out. You might want to check it out. http://www.dynaudioacoustics.com/Default.asp?Id=6611 |

Don't buy anything until you've tried the PMC DB1's which are available in either passive or 'activated' versions (the latter with a Flying Mole Class D amp bolted to the back). These are designed to produce a big sound in a small box, and although my listening experience is limited to the larger PMC TB2's they share the same tweeter and transmission line technology and thus many of the same superb PMC characteristics.

I was recently shopping for my home setup. I too loved the Dynaudio's, If my wife had approved that size of an expenditure, I would have walked home with those. I also loved the KRK V6's, but I use the old KRK 6000's a lot in the big studio, so I am used to their sound. I went home with the KRK RP5's and I have to admit I am really happy with them, especially for what they cost. |

Thank you for all the excellent suggestions. I didn't know about the ADAM artists. seems like an awsome option. i haven't heard much about how good they are and if they are worth the money, but i'm likin it. The Dynaudio BM5a's as far as i understand are 6.7" cones and therefore would be too large for my purposes. i'm not sure why they named them that way. so i'll look more into the PMC DB1s and psiaudio. thanks for the suggestions. thanks again. i'm still open to more suggestions or opinions about the mentioned monitors. thanks. jeff |

I would certainly check out the MAudio BX5's. They're dirt cheap but sound surprisingly good. If nothing else you'll end up with a second pair to reference from.

I'm planning to get a set of NHT M-00 to evaluate in the next few months...

Not sure of your price range, but I'll second the PMC. Wonderful speakers, and a common sound across their whole range of sizes, only varying in bass response. Steve |
