Thread Starter | Blue KIWI Question?
How would you describe the tone of this mic? Whats it sound like or close approximation? U87, U47, U67, 251, C12 etc Thanks

It's definitely closer to the u87 then the others. It has that same softer silk thing going on in the upper range. You can't go wrong with this microphone.

I wouldn't describe it as 'soft silk', it's got a lot of presence and detail, which isn't a bad thing at all (because it's a very high quality microphone), but if you are expecting the microphone to mellow or thicken it isn't going to do that. In this price range you'd probably want to look at the Bottle Rocket 2 tube, with the BLUE B7 capsule added (the B8 that is included with the BR2 has more highs than the B7 capsule) to do something like that. A lot of people seem to pass over the Bottle Rocket, it's the same one that used to be the Red mic and is a great microphone.

Yup got the kiwi here and it wont round and fatten things up like the 87,but it will be more sharp and bright . Mid there kinda the same, lows the 87 has more mellow smooth ones i guess. IMO its not better or worse then the 87 just a bit deferent...love mine and cant think of a reason to sell it ,cause again it will probably not LOSE in an a,b test just be diferent. With its Great value for money,it is better then the 87 wich is over proied(ai). But then again you can get a used vintage good shape 87 in the proce of a new kiwi....and thats a tuff question here, myself im kinda afraid cause i wouldn't know is some one just took the 87's guts out and replaced it with some thing else...

I own one too, but I have to say is seems every time the vocals I cut with the Blue Kiwi, the takes don't get used for the final track. For my voice, I need something that has a bit more bottom fullness. The AKG C414 TLII mic with an Avalon VT-737 sp (2 to 4 db of EQ at 32K to add some air) seems to work best for me. I do think it is closer to a newer U87 but not the low end. The top end is very detailed. Sometimes you want that and sometimes you don't. Gary
