Snow Leopard Released Friday- Intel Only- PPC users out of luck?

6 Things You Need to Know About Mac OS X Snow Leopard | Gadget Lab | Wired.com

I must say I'm pretty shocked to hear this. I spent $4500 on my Quad G5 in 2006, basically the top of the line machine they offered. Are we really to believe that Apple presumes a 3 year useful life on their hardware? Perhaps it's not all doom and gloom though...

I called Apple to get the "official" story regarding support for PPC users. I was told that they will continue to release updates for Leopard "as long as there is a demand". What that means, I'm not sure. I, for one, would really like to see a date. Something in the form of "..At least until X".

As the situation remains now, yes, my mac will remain useable in some ways and will even continue to benefit from security updates, but this announcement means that there is ever-decreasing motivation for Digi and plugin manufacturers to continue to support the PPC platform. This seems especially try for smaller plugin companies with limited time and resources for testing.

Anyone have any thoughts or info on this?

Yes I have.
As always Apple make great products but they have politics which force you to buy stuff you don`t need. So I bet sooner or later they stop supporting leo and they know that some customers have to buy a Intel machine after this.

They make money in this case you loose money and your old machine will just be not a lot worth on E-bay.

I love and hate Apple but I stopped complaining about their politics.

Logic 8 came out and was total mess.
Nearly one year later they got it right.
Now we still have bugs in L8 no major bugs but we have them and instead of fixing these bugs they bring out Logic 9 and stop supporting Logic 8.

They want me to force to buy LOGIC 9 as well as Snow-Leo because it does not run under 10.4.11 ...

I have stable System by now and I will wait to see what happens with Logic 9.
Many new stuff in it I do not need.

Apple is greedy but this is not new news they are a stock rated company and will ever force you to buy something otherwise investors will not buy their stocks....

Happens with every outmoded technology. There are always some people whose timing makes the situation more painful. Sorry, but get used to the idea. Things change awfully quickly these days.

It also relative to your use of the term "useful". If your DAW works as is, then it will be useful for as long as the thing holds together. If you thought of your Mac like a 2" tape machine then this would be obvious.

Upgrades/updates are not usually necessary, just desirable. the whole computer industry is built on this model...

Depending on the type of use, I'd say three years is about right.

LOTS of thoughts! The new OS is for the new Macs, and PPC is not going to be supported. But that doesn't mean it won't work any more! Who needs to pay them for a less-broken OS every year anyway!

Just keep using what you have now and get off the upgrade moneywagon - when what you own won't do it for you anymore, buy new hardware and move on.

Personally, I won't buy any Mac less than a year or two old - by then they have been tested and the bugs found out and are very reliable computers. I am one year into my G5 which was two years when I got it, and plan to keep using it for one to three years more...

Don't sweat it, unless you want to keep up for its own sake. They are in the business of making newer "better" things all the time, and want you to junk the old and buy the new. Keep the one that works for as long as it works!

Still rockin' Tiger over here..... The only way I'll even think about upgrading is if someone flat-out gives me a new Mac..., which oddly enough might just happen.

That being said, IMO a 3-year life span sounds about right if you want to stay on the tip-top of computers on operating systems.

Well you know... That's not only Apple that's the computer industry in generell.

If they would stop enhancing their machines people would complain too...

That's the nature of computer stuff.

I still work with my two G5's from 2004 and I will work with them until 2011.

10.4.11 is solid and I don't spend my dough for a new mac every 2 or 3 years.

Forget about Logic 9 and keep your mac until Logic 10 or 11.
Logic 8.0.2 is stable and why changing a winning team?

10.4.11 and Logic 8.0.2 saves a lot of money if you want.
It's up to you not to Apple.

You and me both. I will never 'upgrade', that will just open up a host of other problems.

Another reason why i refuse to invest alot of money in plug ins unless something is glaringly necessary/must have ala Autotune & Drumagog.
(G4 PPC dual 1.25ghz Digi PTHD user here still!!)
