My new studios design

Well, I just got back from the acoustic engineers office and he gave me a couple of CG images of what my studio will look like. Check it out
The control room will be a little bigger, there is a vocal booth behind the control room you can't see, and the colors of the floors and walls will be different and I am usinga different style of diffusor. The equipment racks will curve around on either side of the board.
The grey wall in the live room is rock.
Tell me what you think

The guy is actually going to put all my gear, board, etc. in the next CG images which I will get later this week. I must warn you though, it is not very slutty yet. Spending a lot of cash on the building and the studio design so that I have something pro. More gear will start being purchased when the clients start to come.

It looks cool. I have my window to my right as well and I love it. I hate the concept of some guy staring at you with a "Hey play it right this time!" look on his face. It’s easy to turn and look if need or in-between takes while talking on the talkback. During take you focus on the monitors and listen while they focus on playing
not on the engineer.

I'd put the couch a little further back to give yourself a bit more space.

Good luck. I hope you do one of those photo essay threads when you start building.

the couch was not put there by my choice. seats will be more to the side and that space will be left open.

That's an awfully large piece of glass on the left. Something I feel is VERY important to obtain good stereo imaging is keeping the surface treatments symetrical. What will be on the wall opposite the window? What angle is that wall? Is there enough splay to avoid early reflections from this glass? Something to quiz your designer about I think.

Good luck with it
Tim.

Im withh Tim 100%.. glass like that can give you some SERIOUS reflections like that and hence will put the asymetrical nature of a 'control' (ie a room with controlled sound characterisitcs) at a serious compromise. The sheer size of that glass would scare me as its relatively close to the monitoring position. I have seen some rooms get away with this design but its mainly as a fucntion between the distance to the said wall in question and the monitoring position.... ie.. the further away the less impact it has..

I would question this with you Accoustics engineer/designer.

Other than that it looks like a nice fit out and please do keep a diary etc.

Cheers
Wiggy

The window is actually smaller, the program just decided to make the whole wall a window. It is about half that size.

I am going back to the acoustic engineers tommorow for another meeting.
Does anybody see any design errors, things that would be good to change, or something to add?
Any help would be very much appreciated.

Yeah, my window is to the left of the mix position, but the entire wall is splayed at 15 degrees. If it's a box shaped control room, re-think putting glass on one side.

How wide is the control room at the front? Is there enough space to add a large frame console if you want to? Is there a machine room or closet? Seperate wiring troughs for audio and electrical runs...

The control room is actually wider than in the picture. The space by the board is about 3.9 meters. I will post the layout when I get it tomorrow. There are a couple of other rooms that aren't shown in these photos. the layout for the wiring is almost complete, just waiting for the finall design. I will not have room for a large console, and by the time I can afford the one I want I would redo the studio. the building is very large and expanding is an option if needed in the future.

Besides the glass, the other thing that jumped out at me is the ceiling in the live room - awfully parallel to the floor there - I would see if you can at least build it with wide "VVVVV" type of thing - just to help the resonances for dominating.

Do you own the building?

If you do, don't be stupid...plan for the future now. In 5-10 years, if you decide to drop in a large console you won't want to remodel the room. Get the infrastructure right the first time. Knocking walls out and spending thousands redoing the whole thing just to gain three feet (one meter) would suck.

A lot.

Just my 2 cents.

I have a GREAT idea. Once you have your plans, hire another respected acoustician to look them over.... maybe costs a hundred dollars or so for a phone consultation.

If he (or she) okays them, you'll know you are in good shape. If he brings up any big issues, that may be the best $100 spent on the project.

good luck!
