What period was the "bad" UA 1176 LN made?

Hi all.

Anyone know the dates when Universal Audio cut some corners concerning parts re their 1176 LN?

Thanks,

Really... no-one knows.

That's disappointing.

Do a search. It's been discussed a lot before including Warren (war) posting an email from UA with the serial numbers..

I've used about every revision there is extensively and the are all pretty good.

I guess you could say that the later revisions once they went to a differential opamp front end were the lesser versions.
Still, they are pretty decent.

I don't think there is a case of a "bad" 1176s.
Some are just better than others.
Maybe a bit more "magic."

I think the OP is asking about the UA reissue when they couldn't get the proper T-Pad input attenuator and substituted an inferior design for it without mentioning it. Plenty of info in the search function..

OK, I was wondering!

We had seven 1176s at a studio I was at for years and they all lived in my room for a period of time (not all at once!)
I had a blue stripe before those, so there was almost every revision represented in those eight units.
At least, there was every circuit type, so I got a good feel for 1176s in those fourteen years!

My good friend has the two opamp front end units and they aren't THAT bad!

Thanks for the direction to WAR. That solved it.

I did do many searches but came up empty handed.

With WAR in the search it came up easily.

Thanks again,

You could post the serials here, for future search reference.

Good point.

Serial #'s affected are: 1959 to 2948.

Unit # 1959 was produced in 2003.

Unit # 2948 was produced in 2005.

Since late 2005 UA has only shipped units including the replacement t-pad.

Taken from WAR's original post.

Oh great I have #2693.
The sound is very okay, clearly 1176LN but the bulbs go out quick and the input pot became loud scratchy very quick.

I wouldn't worry about it. I've never heard anyone say that they actually sounded bad. Just that the attenuator was a different part.

Are you talking about the input attn/pot?

Starting on Suffix G they used a 10K pot.
Those were the beginning of the differential amp front end.

The Suffix F units have the UTC transformer on the input and they have the T circuit.
It involves two pots and two 620 ohm resistors.
The value for neither pot is listed on the schematic!

The fact that the first thing the signal hits when it enters the Suffix F units is the T Attenuator.
If R4 (the pot on the front panel) is not high quality there will be noise.
The originals had Potter Brumfelds.
Those are still fairly common pots.

well yes the input attenuator pot.

It's loud and scratchy, it developed it really quick maybe 5/6 months after I got it.
but we are talking reissues here not the originals Danny.
