He used one of th early Dual Rectifiers, and he was using a Zion with Joe Barden pickups, strung with 9-42 gauge strings, even for such a low tuning!

There's an old interview somewhere... I think it might be Guitarist Magazine

found it here!

that *better* be a dual rec, nothing else sounds like that does it?

quadruple tracked, for your pleasure. and one of my favorite guitar riffs ever.

I dont know if they do it anymore but I saw KX about 10 years ago and they put sheets over their gear so you couldnt see what was used. I say that these people need to get over themselves. Who cares if someone knows what you use, you're not them and they aint you.

I remember talking to Doug during the Mr. Bulbous era (seemed like they were tuning down another half step on each album they put out). He said that they tried switching string gauges -- (they were 9's on gtr and 40-95 on bass) and it really, really just didn't sound as right.

Thin picks & strings can sound SUPER heavy -- the touch required is a lot different, though. Y'know, it's just that "some is good, more is better" mentality that f&^ks with people sometimes...

I heard somewhere that he used to use those Gibson Lab Series amps...they were his "secret weapon". Not sure though.

Ty used those on the early albums in the late 80s. I think he switched to Mesa somewhere around the Dogman era.

Those guys freakin' rock!

maybe they were beer guards or something :P In an interview after that album Doug PInnick told, in the most detail I've ever read in an interview of the musicians, what his live setup tricks are. So I really don't think they were trying to hide anything.

Nah... they had "dummy gear" with all kinds of dumbass settings during the POD phase [which fortunately our own Mr. Wagener convinced Ty to abandon]

Lol. Tissues over the PODS, thats a good one.

The tone secrets thing annoys me because it strikes me as the artist being snotty and or insecure. When I lived in L.A. I had a friend who saw Eddie The Drunken Guitarist a.k.a. Ed Van Halen walk into a vintage shop, plug into a pignose and an ordinary guitar and he still sounded like EVH. Friend said he asked the drunk to show him some VH licks and he was cool about it and still sounded like Ed.

it's an interesting thing. on the one hand, i'm all about sharin' the love, giving it away, putting back out there what was given to me.

on the other, in this age of rampant, blatant, unabashed derivatives, where copping a sound and vibe are de facto part of the commercial engine, i can understand an artist who's managed to carve a unique personal niche not wanting every t d &h making a slapdash copy and selling it as their own.

what is it, 14 years since 'Ten' was released, and the airwaves are *still* full of vedder vocal knockoffs? y'know, where every vowel is an 'eh' thru the nose bone, neh metter whet?

I believe Ty used to use Traynor amps back in the day.....

That guy could play through Radio shack 1 watt amp and make it scream..

Couldn't have said it better myself. King's X is a never-ending source of inspiration to me: their musicianship, integrity, hard work, friendliness to fans, and kick ass songs. And their TONE!

So, if anyone else on this thread wants to make fun of King's X, or say anything nasty about them, they're gonna have to answer to ME. Got it?

So if you want to step up, bring it on. Otherwise, I expect to see nothing but respectful, admiring, awe-struck posts about King's X.

And believe me, you're much better off dealing with me than with Doug. I've seen him get pissed off on stage at a malfunctioning monitor amp. I was standing about four feet from him, and instead of yelling at the monitor engineer or at the crowd (who kept shouting requests and stuff), he channeled all his frustration and rage into singing "What Is This?" Wow... I've never been more scared or blown away by a live performance. Powerful stuff.

So you don't want Doug coming after you. Not that he's the kind of guy to do that, he's a total sweetheart - I've met and talked with him several times. Big teddy bear. But when angered, a big grizzly bear.

Consider yourselves warned!

And getting back to the topic of the thread, I think Blast9 is 100% correct.

On the last tour I saw (fall, 2004), I still saw Ty using Pods. I believe it was a Pod XT Pro, the rackmount unit. Not sure about his guitars.

I listened to his tech play through the rig to check it out before the show, and it did not sound anything at all like Ty. And he played a few King's X riffs.

It's all in the hands and touch.

I always get a kick out of people who waste thousands of dollars to replicate their favorite guitar player's rig, then can't figure out why they don't sound anything like them. Ty would sound like Ty no matter what rig he used, because it truly is all in the fingers.
