What kind of 2nd hand gear, specifically? Are we talking instruments or pro audio?
I believe Themaidsroom is right. You're better off shopping on line for the best deals, unless you see something in NYC that you consider a "must have".
Why pay for someone else's overhead?

i think there is a shady little gear shop on 30th st(ithink) between 7th and 8th. (its across the street from the modern drum shop, and a guitar shop which i assume is the one mentioned?)

they had an akg solid tube($500), ev 635a ($50), re-20 ($300) and a bunch of keys, mixers, a few beat up ns-10s...

Rogue Music:

Full market prices, but good stuff.
Downstairs there's "Armens", he has a lot of stuff, but after one deal with him I would not recommend his store to anyone.

Two Lines Music, great collection of analog synths, and electric pianos. Full market prices.

Like someone else mentioned, you should check out Craigslist for stuff in the NYC area. If you have a car, sometimes you'll find a good deal on stuff a little ways outside the city.

FWIW, I went past there the other day and Two Lines was gone. No sign saying they moved or anything.

Which Two Lines did you go to? I know the one up in Times Square is closed. But they have another location down in Tribecca, though they seem to be getting rid of a lot of stuff on ebay.
