Calibrating an 888?

Hey, can anyone tell me how to calibrate a Digidesign 888? This Pro Tools rig I'm working on has some variance in levels in both the inputs and the outputs and I'm sure it's really easy to calibrate it... according to the manual, there's supposed to be a calibration tool, but I couldn't find it. Any help would be appreciated... thanks.

There should be two sets of eight holes on the front of the unit. Each one of these houses a small phillips head pot. You can use a jewelers screw driver to adjust them. Run a 1k from the tone generator in ProTools out each of your outs and calibrate them accordingly. Then run 1k tones from a CD or other source into the ins and adjust them as needed. I have heard that you're supposed to use a ceramic screw driver to adjust the pots but I'm really not sure if it's needed. Anyone know for sure?

Yeah, but what do I calibrate it to? Do you want to bring the ins and outs up right up until the point of peaking? Do you check the levels on the ins using the computer's meters and the outs using the consoles meters? Sorry if my wording is confusing, but I've never done this before.

Are you calibrating it to a desk?

If so, I suggest a 1 kHz test tone from the desk at "0 VU" should be perhaps -14 dBFS on the digi interfaces for rock/pop/country/ads. For live classical or jazz, use 0 VU from the desk to hit -20 dBFS.

apple+click on the volume display (add alt for all tracks) on the track display will switch the readout to peak metering, this will enable you to set for -14dbfs for example. Just click it once to reset if you go over your desired level!
