help me improve my chain I'm recording vocals for my band( audio is in my signature...new un-mastered songs)and i would like some advice on how to improve my vocal chain. Don't get me wrong. I think it sounds great, but I'm basically wondering if a high quality converter or a really good compressor would step up my vocal chain significantly. right now i am using: Sm7b or Ksm44 for vox----Neve Portico-------no compression-------fed to a Presonus Digimax that converts the signal to digital. the soundcard is a rme 24/96 i think. I was planning to buy a royer 121, but for the music i'm making I think maybe i should focus on the Vocal chain. oh yeah...monitoring thru mackie 824's. I have to double-check the bass frequencies in our stereos and cars....(SUBS). i welcome any advice you can offer.

Ah ha ha ha... love it! It's got to be compression. The trouble with vox recording is that the transients are severe, and even though they may not notice, they affect quality. I would suggest some gentle compression on the way in. I'm always telling people to get in close on the mic and sing like the person to whom you are singing is sitting next to you. That, in combination with some decent compression before the signal hits digital, and you are halfway there. (You can't fix it in the mix!)

I'd check out the Distressor or an 1176.
