Les Paul was a genius. He invented techniques and new machines that simply did not exist. That's part of what made him special.

... a true pioneer

A musician and inventor.

He was a pioneer in the development of the
solid-body electric guitar which
"made the sound of rock and roll possible"

He is credited with inventing or discovering many recording innovations including:

- multitrack recording
- overdubbing (also known as sound on sound)
- delay effects such as tape delay, phasing effects
and many more...

His innovative talents extended into his playing style including:
- licks
- trills
- chording sequences
- fretting techniques
- timing, which set him apart from his contemporaries and inspired many of the guitarists of the present day.

He recorded with his wife Mary Ford in the 1950s and they sold millions of hit records.

I found these photos on google looking up information about Les Paul and his use
of the Ampex tape recorders.

And here's a photo of my 85' Les Paul Studio Standard Dot Neck Reissue with my
fully functional 1952 Ampex 403-P mic preamp.

I'm a little confused by this Bob. How did they not exist if he invented them? Like vapour-ware?

If he had a lookalike who lived in Tokyo and was notoriously spendthrift, they could have called him a cheap Japanese Les Paul copy.

Oops. "That simply did not exist before he invented them". Most inventors today are working on the shoulders of many previous inventions, there are very few unique and original breakthroughs today. Who invented the multitrack recorder?

Actually, there were 7-track military field recorders before he got involved. They were simply one-pass deals though, no going back to overdub stuff (obviously) and Les Paul's the one who made that possible.

Speaking of great losses, you guys hear they closed Bell Laboratories? Their parent company wanted to "invest in more immediately profitable" ventures. More profitable.... we owe almost EVERYTHING about our modern lives to Bell Labs, especially in the music industry. What's more profitable than that?

Did you hear about the lathe he had under his bed?

He used to cut his own records on it!

Any of us would do well to have one hundredth of the influence that Les Paul had on recording and music. A true genius.

He was originally overdubbing by going from one lacquer to another.

The multitrack concept of "Sel-Sync" was invented by Ross Synder of Ampex, and popularized in Paul's Octopus recorder.

I would love to see a memorial concert on the mall in Washington D.C. to
honor this great American.

It doesn't matter what style of music you may be into, this remarkable man
contributed to all of them.

This one man has contributed so much to so many, he deserves our highest tribute.

Just to be clear, Les Paul did not invent multi tracking.

But somebody had to be the guy who looked at all this new technology and said "hmmm....I bet you could do this with it." Les Paul is the guy who made that conceptual leap.
Truth be told, he didn't design the Les Paul guitar either (Ted McCarty), though he had input, and it was based on his pioneering work.

But the list of his innovations would fill a book. A large part of what we do is thanks to him. He was a true giant of our industry.

And something that gets passed over a bit- the man was a KILLER guitar player!

sure he did, he retrofitted a two track with a repro head in like 1949 He made the first console too. The tape delay, the flanger the first solid gtr, the Guy was a genius and the first electric gtr shredder I might add. that guy could play circles around VanHalen for gawds sake.

He design the Les Paul with Ted McCarty. McCarty did invent the Korina Explorer, V and moderne in 57 though so hats off to him to for invented the best sounding gtrs along with the Paul. Les originally used the lateral timber that went under Train racks for his original neck design. Then he and Ted redesigned the tenon to fit the les paul gtr.
I think McCarty came up with the carved top. Well it wasn't really carved I think they had automated systems in the 50's too.

where do you get your info? I don't think is accurate.
