The gypsy swing musicians in Europe thought me not to be sad for the person.
They have saying and it goes:

"He went home!"

His contributions made it possible for all modern music to evolve into the many forms of r and b, rock and roll, soul, funk, pop, hip hop, jazz, classical, etc.. Without his work we would never have the concept of an overdub or the layers of sound from our favorite recordings.

I always associated his guitars with a certain whine and growl that you can't find in a Strat or any other guitar.
We are truly blessed to have known this man or to know him through his technical contributions and restless desire for music and things musical.

Peace be Upon you Les Paul.

Peace
Illumination

Yes, sad news. I just wished that he would get the respect by the media that he deserves. I can hear most people saying "Les who?". If they only knew.

I saw him play twice in New York. The first time he signed my Les Paul Custom guitar which you can see on my web site revelationsoundstudio.com. We chatted a bit and I found him to be very friendly and still a great guitar player as his age.

They have a couple of videos out on him playing in New York that is a real treat. It goes to show you who Jeff Beck learned a lot of his tricks from. Check out Youtube with Jeff and Les jamming together as well as Chet Atkins and Les together. There is nothing better.

Rest in Peace Les.

I was shocked when I learned about MJ's death (but life went on...).

I'm truly gutted and sad since I saw this though.

RIP Les!

Yeah... I heard it on the radio as soon as it was released that he had died...

I'll mark life by it just like I did the day Frank Zappa died.

My two biggest musical heros.

It was odd to hear that he had died because for the last month I had been thinking about using some un-used AAirmiles to fly to NY to see him play at the Iridium.
I was thinking about making it a day trip and see if any GS member was up to it.
In the back of my mind I was thinking that I needed to hurry up and do it if I was going to ever see him at all.
I also wondering about his condition and IF he was gigging at all.
I kind of kept putting it off because i was afraid of what I'd be told.

I always equate his age to that of my wife's grandmother who is the same exact age.
He seemed to have an awfully agile mind for someone who is 94.
GG is sharp as a tack on some days and there are NOT many 94 year old men who are.

God bless Lester Poulfuss
Thank you

You are correct.
Les Pauls were not built between '60 and '68.
There were early SG shaped "Les Pauls" but he didn't like them and had his endorsement removed from them.
I once had a white SG/Les Paual Custom (shoulda' kept that one.)
Gibson renamed them the SG which is short for Solid Guitar.

Do realize that Les Paul didn't design the guitar we call the Les Paul.
The guitar was designed by then Gibson head ted McCarty.
Les Paul did gave his endorsement and suggested improvements from the beginning.
According to Ted McCarty, Les Pual's "log" and the fact that Fender had already put out the Broadcaster was "inspiration" for Gibson's follow-up sold body guitar, the Les Paul.

There is also more to the 8-track recorder story than most people know, but now isn't the time to go into that.

I never expected this when I got out of bed.. I have been weeping quietly for the past hour.

I can't imagine what my life as a guitarist would have been (if at all) without my '72 Gold Top. I got my first Gibson Les Paul in 1972 - a thing of beauty.

I've been recording some tracks and 3 days ago I grabbed my 'paul and it's been on the guitar stand ever since.. I don't play it much these days but I should've known something was up when I sat it so close to me in the studio.

Tonight I'll be playing my Les Paul at the gig to remind myself (and others) of not what has just been lost, but also of what has been recieved over a lifetime in music.

Thanks Les, you inspired me in more ways than I could have imagined all those years ago.

I'm not religious but I just have to say it. There's a Gold Top in heaven tonight.

Rock On Mate!

What a sad day for guitarists and recording engineers everywhere, in fact the audio world in general. He had a pretty good innings though, but somehow it doesn't make you feel any the less gutted :(

In a world of legends, he was a giant. Sad to see him pass, but at 94 and still rockin' to the very end, you can't accuse him of pulling up stumps prematurely. A life well lived. RIP.

yes but their were a few 61 Les Pauls that were SG's but labeled as Les Pauls, i have owned a few.
seems i recall he did not want his name on the any endorsement do to divorce settlement issues, and when he seen the new Les Paul ( to become the SG ), he did not want to endorse it?
please correct me if needed?

Les Paul was a awesome innovator and he will be missed immensely!

I wonder if Ted McCarty ever quite got the attention he deserved for this guitar and the others he designed. He turned a Log into a work of art, a true artist indeed... the most beautiful electric guitar ever made.
