Thread Starter | Parallel Compression Possibilities ITB
With all the routing and automation possibilities, how do you guys set up your parallel compression schemes when working entirely ITB for maximum benefit? Do you use group channels or set up additional busses or what? Just looking for some useful ways of routing things through compressors. thanks |

If you have latency compensation through the whole chain, you can just use an aux.

in pro tools, I generally route my drums tracks (and often percussion and bass as well) to a stereo bus. Then I set up two auxes with this stereo rhythm bus as the source for both. One uses no compression or very little, and the other is smashed to smithereens (or not so much for lighter tunes). Get a good sound on both auxes. You're going for punch on the uncompressed one and pump on the smashed one. Then use mostly the uncompressed channel and just feed in the smashed one. Tried and true trick, and it works wonders for in the box mixes. Once you realize the potential it, you'll be doing it on many elements... perhaps the whole mix *gasp* Two things: use good compressors. And only do it with delay compensation, even if you're think you can compensate for phase differences with time adjusters or identical plugins or whatever. delay compensation is there for a reasion... use it. |
