API, Purples "The Biz", BAE or OSA

I think I posted this in the wrong section earlier which is why I'm moving it to here.
I'm thinking about getting a Lunchbox and some modules. Question is which modules would be best suited for VO work. I'm looking for that punchy in your face sound since I do alot of rock imaging. I'm thinking about either API 512c, Purples "The BIZ", OSA or something from BAE. I really like the idea that it's expandable for future growth. Any idea which would really make a VO stand out? I use a Rode NTK with a Mullard tube and an SM7. Hopefully a Brauner Phantom C on the way in a couple of weeks. I really appreciate the input from folks who've used or are using them. Nothing speaks better than exprerience!

Thank,

I've only used a couple of the preamps mentioned at the same time. I like the API, but I don't do V/O stuff much. Fat and punchy, they are.

The 512c or brent averill 312 pre amp would be best suited for vocals or anything for that matter, drums, bass, guitars. Call up avedis at brent averril they're really good about letting people demo there stuff!

Have you heard them ALL in order to make that definitive of a statement?

They are all great, they will all work well. I guess that doesn't simplify matters, but it's the truth. And there is no 'be all end all' preamp either - ANYWHERE.

That's the truth! That's why I'm thinking about the Lunchbox type setup. Get a couple of different types. Alot of people think because you do VO work one mic and one pre will do ya. Doesn't work that way, at least not for me. Don't wanna be stuck with just one type and have to make do for all deliveries. Hard sell spots, sincere reads, narrations all take a different type of sound. Hence different mics and different pres. Plus I'm a Slut so I want as much useful stuff in the rack as I can get.

Yeah, I think that one's on my short list. I've read some good things about it here. What's there about it that makes it your favorite?

biz is amazing- fast, clear, tons of colors available throught the gain stage manipulation (input and output attenuators as well as the second gain stage). i'm currently selling my bae 312 (the original ones) to make room for more biz. i want more biz!!! highly recommended and purple andrew is super cool too. plus the metering is hot hot biz! steel string guitars are like KAPOW with the biz and i've gotten great results with both female and male vox with them- go biz. i'm very interested to check out the next couple of preamps purple has coming out (at least 2 more flavors of preamp) as i love these biz so much. prammy

My apologies. I didin't intend to come off as if I had done a shootout between these pres. I'm sure you guys at atlas have though. What did you think about the purple? I know you guys really dig the osa stuff over there too. What the hell do I know I'm just a slacked jawed yockel.

So then I take it you REALLY like the BIZ. Thanks for all the input. It's just what I was looking for. I know I won't know for sure till I try it myself but hell that's half the fun.

Please see my comments (link below) in regards to Art's preamps...those are very old models that are not currently produced, and that were purchased used. Not representative of new OSA product in 2005. However, if there is a problem on a preamp, then Dale will make every effort to fix the problem. OSA offers a lifetime warranty on the product to the original owner. Thanks.
