noob question

Hi All,
I have a question, recently i was watching "mix it like a record" dvd, by charles dye. There charles mentions using mcdsp ac1 on his master fader or buss mix, but he says its better to put the plugin in the begining of the mix, rather than at the end of the mix. What does he man by that, whats the difference between the two? How does one get that in pro tools?
Thanks,
Abhijit

well, I can't speak for mr. Dye ofcourse, haven't seen the documentary and I'm a noob too...

but my guess is that he means before you start mixing, instead of putting the plugin in on the end of the process. So that you immediately hear what happens and don't have to tweak so much afterwards.

Interesting. I'm wondering if it's because compressors/eqs react differently to the audio when there is such a plugin inserted before.

So,
Stw, what you mean is before placing any compressor/eq/any other plugin, place this plugin first and then try to spice it up according to your tastes, right?
Thanks...

It is common to put stuff on the 2bus before you start mixing.

It changes mixing desicions. for example it affects how you ride the gain of a specific track.

If you put it an at the end of the mix your basically trying to master.

Cheers!

what he means is, inserting the plugin on your master bus before you start mixing will allow you to judge all your mixing decisions whilst hearing them being affected by the plug-in. as opposed to doing a whole mix then slapping a plug-in over the whole thing and hoping for the best.

if something affects the whole mix, it's better to know what affect it has while mixing. otherwise it's likely to make your mix worse.
