Thread Starter | How do you clean your ears ...
It get's dirty .... I really had a problem after swimming in the greek seas ... my left ear was gone totaly .. I had to walk around mono for about 7 days ....i finally got an infection and had to go to the hospital to get some peniciline cure .... The cure worked and back in holland my doctor saw that my ear was still full off bad stuff so he tried to blow it out with water, but that didn't work .. i had to drop in a few drops of a kind of fluid and after three day's he tried again and was succesful in cleaning my ear .... Man I had to do some mastering in these day's .... Lesson learned ... check my ears before I go on holiday .... Just wanted to write something stupid .... |

I just had mine cleaned out at the doctor's office. He used a giant stainless steel srynge and shot warm water in my ears to loosen the wax build up. I was shocked and grossed out at the size of the two chunks he pulled out. My left ear seemed a little muted and my right one was ringing so I went and had the doctor check em out. After the procedure, which was not bad at all, it just tickled a lot, I swear I could hear ants walking. Even the sound of change in my hands and my pant legs rubbing together was freaking me out. My hearing seems hyper sensitive now. It has been 5 days since I had it done and the hyper sensitivity is wearing down a bit. All I can say is wow!

Castor oil drops for a couple of days before getting the ears syringed by the doc. It's a treat! I get this done about once per year. |

Although it is illegal and you can be arrested for doing so, I use cotton buds to clean my lugholes (ears for the uninitiated). Like managing to itch that part of your back you can't normally reach but somehow managed to that one time (and put your shoulder out doing it), it's one of the most pleasurable experiences in the world (sex and kicking a tramp withstanding). Funnily enough, I had my earholes syringed when I was about 8 years old. I had to hold a kidney dish over my right shoulder to catch the spillage and any things that came flying out (you get the picture). Being the age of 8, I thought I had gone deaf in one ear because of the problem I had, but into the kidney dish after a warm-ish jet of water into the ear in question shot a big ball of cotton. Apparently I'd been too vigorous in my pursuit of earwax that the tip of a cotton bud had become lodged in there... Maybe give the cotton bud idea a miss (if you're stupid or 8 and below) |

My Father's side of the family seems to have a high incidence of ear wax buildup. Every Doctor's visit regardless of purpose inevitablly ends up with an ear cleaning. Sometimes merely probing with a metal pick and pulling pieces out works. If its stubborn he used to use a stainless steel srynge that shoots warm water in my ears to loosen the wax build up. Lately, I am brought into a room with a "water gun" hooked up to a faucet and then they blast away for minutes on end. Not painful but leaves you a bit dizzy by the inner ear getting pummled. There is an at-home set up you can buy over the counter. Basically, a rubber suction ball with a spout. Fill your sink up with very warm water...suction in the water then long slow blasts into your ear. This works for short term problems. The best advice is to visit once every year or so and have the Doctor take a look and do his thing if necessary. Brings back a lot of your top end. FWIW you really shouldn't use Q-tips but if you do just use them to rub around the rim of your ear. Never plunge inward. At that point you would merely be packing the wax in making it more difficult to remove.

However, Everynow and then over the last 20 years I occassionally have the water treatment done by a doctor. No damage. Given a choice bewtween which method I would most definitely prefer water over fire. How does one apply fire to your ear without causing some pain or damage? | |

Ear candling is great - and it works. In older times it was also done to 'open your mind' when you had to make a decision.

Had my ears cleaned out with the water jet and the wax was too hard so some water got caught behind it and gave me an infection. Very unpleasant. Being without hearing for a few weeks really makes you value it more! I'd only recommend getting your ears cleaned if you really need it!!! After my infection I went to a specialist and they used a small vacuum cleaner to get out the dried puss! Not nice either... If you have hard wax buildup my doctors recommended a few drops of olive oil left in each ear for 5minutes once or twice a week to soften and lubricate the wax. Normally it should just make its own way out as the skin in the ear canal grows and the small hairs do their job. I'd say a little wax is natural and it helps to protect the ear, keeping it dry and free from infection. Nature should keep your ear clear enough of wax but a bit of oil helps it along if need be. Remember, you've only got one set of ears and they have to last a lifetime. Be careful with them and don't unnecessarily disturb them as you might well regret it!!! |

I had severe bloackage in one ear recently. a couple drops of mineral oil for a few days softened the earwax enough to clean itself. good luck |

"What happens in ear candling is that a foot-long hollow fabric cone candle impregnated with bee's wax is stuck in your ear and lit. The candle is then supposed to create a vacuum that sucks wax and debris from your ear. From studies I've seen, the only thing that accumulates are ear injuries. There have been at least 21 known injuries from the candles, including burns, eardrum perforations and temporary hearing loss, according to reports in the UC Berkeley Wellness Letter. Also, the debris that accumulates is from the candles themselves, not from the ear. You can prove this by sticking an ear candle in a large jar, lighting it and seeing what is left over. I've recently received some promotions for ear candles with testimonials from people who claim they work. This isn't proof. If you want to know if something works, you look at valid scientific studies. Personally, I don't see how anyone could think sticking a candle in an ear and lighting it could be healthy." Source: UC Berkeley Wellness Letter, March 1999. Another great site http://www.quackwatch.org/01Quackery.../candling.html The Bottom Line "For most people, ear wax moves along the ear canal and eventually makes it to the outside, taking with it any accumulated dirt or other matter. Compacted ear wax should be removed by a physician or other health professional using legitimate instruments. Candling is both ineffective and dangerous." |

This place a block over from my studio called Rainbow Grocery (if you're ever in SF and are into organic/health stuff, do yourself a favor and go there!) supposedly has the "ear candle" stuff. The way it was described to me is that you put these little cones in your year, light a match, and then the smoke kind of goes into your ear and magically your ears are drained. I'll investigate....

I just leave the shit in there ! And every once in a while my ear itches a bit so I`ll stick my grubby finger in there and wiggle it around a bit till it stops. In the shower I`ll sometimes put a bit of soap in the damn things and rinse it out with water. Ya buncha sissys ! I`ve never had an ear infection in my life. J/K Personally I think if your trying to get rid of the stuff that`s naturally in there with little metal bits or wax or squirting water into a super sensitive area like that your setting yourself up for trouble more than helping anything. Your getting rid of something that`s there to protect your ear ! Maybe I don`t hear as good as you lot but at least I`m not screwing with my bodys natural ability to protect itself. If theres too much stuff in there it`ll find itself out somehow.
