Suggestions for taking out ambiance from vocal !!!

I'm mixing a live show where the vocal and BV mic has a good amount of drum leakage. Any suggestions for removing as much leakage as possible.. ?? Thanks

extensive fader rides are probably your best bet

in worse case gentle expanders that still sound good

and the most important question for live stuff, how does the vocal track sound IN the mix?

I, basically, like to take out as much ambiance sound coming from the vocal mics as possible so the drums won't not sound as washy. In this case, fader rides won't help much. I tried the expander...not great. Anybody uses the Transient Designer, Waves and Sony Trans X for this purpose ???

If the leakage is as bad as you are saying, sometimes it is better not to try and hide it, but incorperate it as part of the "live" sound. Often in trying to hide things like this all you suceed in doing is drawing attention to it. You could as you suggest try an enveloper such as the Transient Designer, but it might be too vicious for the vocal. I would experiment with the vocal compression vs fader riding to see which gives the most acceptable result, and it can be a good idea to make changes to the drum balance with the vocal mic switched in. Possibly by subtle changes in the drum mic balance you can change the wash effect to more of a live effect.

Good luck!

Guys, this might work if you are trying to reduce the ambience of the vocal from the vocal take (i.e. the vocal was recorded with too much room) but it will do nothing to reduce the leakage of drums between vocal phrases. tutt

why do you need to reduce the bleed? bleed is a good thing. befriend the bleed. BE the bleed.

unless it's too much drums even with the drum mics muted, you can work with it. why? because you have to.

i like that approach. think positive. take the bad thing, turn it around and let it work for you
