STOLEN GEAR - Columbus, OH

It is a real shame when something like this happens. We are passing along a message from good friends whose tour van was broken into over the weekend. If you know anything or hear anything please use the contact info at the end of this post. If you live in this area please spread the word to your local pawn and music stores.

The Randy Kohrs Band has suffered a devastating loss when the band van was broken into and nearly everything stolen out of it this weekend following a performance at the Musicians Against Childhood Cancer festival near Columbus, OH. It was stolen out of the Sleep Inn parking lot in Obetz, OH between 3:30am and 5:00am, estimated.

Here is the current list of missing items:

Scheerhorn L-Body Resonator guitar #547

Amistar Randy Kohrs Model tricone resonator

Meredith all blonde, tongue-oiled maple resonator guitar

Mike Long D-18 style acoustic guitar

*All guitars had fishman pick-ups

Custom Cedar Creek Case for the Meredith – black alligator, inside is purple, has “Custom Built for Randy Kohrs” plate

Two white Calton Cases with Randy’s name on them, both had red interiors

Cedar Creek case for the acoustic Mike Long Guitar

Forrest Craig (Texas-based luthier) Violin with L.R. Baggs pickup

Strad copy violin, roughly 1880’s, the tag inside not exactly accurate. Pictures can be seen on our website/pages.

A double violin case, the attached strap doesn’t match – it’s maroon and gray with gold hardware.

Upright acoustic King Bass, white with black trim, red tailpiece, rare

2 Warwick 2 10” speaker cabinets

Silver waterproof helicopter case with cables and a Shure wireless system

3 Stage Ninja brand quarter inch cables

Fishman Dreadnought Aura, Fishman resophonic Aura, Fishman Reverb, Fishman Chorus, Fishman Delay, Boosta Grande Boost pedal, 2 Radial DI’s, Radial Tone Bone Pre-Amp, Hilton Optical volume pedal, 2 Peterson Strobe Stomp Tuners (one had Ashley B. written on the front of it in black marker)

Tool Kit with extra cords and assorted tools.

We don’t want to discourage the thieves from attempting to sell anything as we’d love for them to be caught ASAP – the last thing we want is for the thieves to just throw them in a dumpster or ditch, never to be found. Feel free to pass this along to anyone you see fit. Please contact me if any of this is seen or you have any questions!

i got some of my music gear and instruments stolen from my suv once after a gig one night. i know the feeling quite well. i am very sorry for the loss.

by the way, does the band have serial numbers for any of stolen items? you need at least one or two serial numbers so that the police can trace it back.

good luck to you and may the thief or thieves get arrested. Keep us posted.

RANDY KOHRS BANDS' STOLEN INSTRUMENTS RECOVERED

Musicians Robbed After Playing Cancer Benefit,
Grateful For Safe Return of Possessions

Nashville, TN-

Following a performance on July 25th, 2009, at the Musicians Against Childhood Cancer Festival, a four day event benefiting St. Jude Children's Research Hospital near Columbus, OH, Grammy-winning producer and world-renowned resonator guitarist Randy Kohrs, along with his progressive acoustic country band, found themselves facing every traveling musician's second-worst nightmare. The majority of their instruments and related gear, along with several personal items, were stolen from their vehicle while in the parking lot of the Sleep Inn in Obetz, Ohio.

"This is my sixth or seventh year to play the MACC and I look forward to it every year as it's such a good cause. We see friends that we only see here, so most of us were out at the festival until well after 3am." Kohrs said. "This was the first time we've ever left our instruments unattended and did so knowing we had to get up early to head back to Nashville. Lesson learned!"

Totaling around $60,000 in missing items, instruments included a one-of-a-kind acoustic upright King bass belonging to band member Elio Giordano, a unique Randy Kohrs model Amistar guitar with Kohrs' name engraved in large lettering along the side, and a late-1800's Italian violin, a prized-possession of band member Ashley Brown. Oddly enough, none of the drums were taken. Two other band members traveled to the show separately and their instruments were not in the vehicle.

The Obetz police department responded when the discovery was made, though Detective Jeff Reed of the Franklin County Sheriff's Department headed up the initial investigation. The culprits left behind no fingerprints or noticeable evidence.

"Our instruments are so recognizable and rare, we didn't hold much hope in ever seeing them again, figuring that whoever did it would just dump them somewhere and not risk trying to sell them." Kohrs said.

However, on July 31st, three guitars belonging to Kohrs were sold to two separate pawn shops in Columbus, not far from Obetz. Detectives with the Columbus Police Department, in conjunction with Detective Reed, tracked down the seller, who was decidedly not involved in the initial heist. They learned through this suspect, however, that the next to be sold were the two missing violins and pawn shops in the area were put on alert.
Two days later, a third pawn shop contacted the police as men were attempting to sell the anticipated instruments and stalled them until law enforcement arrived. This ultimately lead to the discovery of the majority of the remaining stolen items.

"What wasn't found were some things we can easily replace, like the gps and clothes. The instruments are our livelihoods! Elio's bass helped him support his wife and four kids, and the look, well, it looks like someone shaped a corvette into a bass, completed his image with his own band. There's only one of those in the world!" Kohrs says triumphantly, "Ashley's main fiddle was even still in tune! We are just so blessed to get this all back!"

Special thanks go out to all the detectives involved: Franklin County Det. Jeff Reed, and the Columbus Police Department's Det. Ron Turner, Det. J.B. Summers, Det. Steve Nate, and Det. Robert Hoffman.

Details on the suspects' names are not able to be released until they have been fully charged, which is expected to happen within the coming week. Charges thus far include six felony counts of the fourth degree.

I assistant engineer for Randy at this studio, Slack Key, here in Nashville and was relieved to hear his instruments were recovered. Not only is Randy an amazing musician but an extremely talented engineer and Grammy Winning producer. Elio and Ashley are both such a warm-hearted, great individuals I couldn't imagine a worse circumstance for a wonderful group of people.
