Analogue: Less Tracks + Bouncing Vs More Tracks Without

Does the former really give you less noise than the latter?

Given two tape decks using the same tape width but different track counts.

All else being equal.

I think partly it's as much of a question of fidelity as it is noise. When you bounce, you can lose fidelity. Yet more tracks =more noise.

Part of the fidelity loss is due to the build up of noise. You might be able to manage the noise better with two decks. You could be more judicious with you mutes and
S/N ratio. But, I've never locked two decks so I'm just thinking out loud here.
