Bass Traps w/Rigid Fiberglass

I finally found a local dealer for some of the OC 703 (2") rigid fiberglass...

They have both the foil-lined and the paper-lined. I remember reading some posts quite a while ago about the advantages/disadvantages of each...can someone refresh my memory?

I am looking to build traps that will have 4" of 703 (2 layers of 2") in a wood frame with a similar design to Ethan's DIY models. I'll be trapping each corner, plus the ceiling/wall junction above the back of the console. I have some foam on the side walls now, but might replace them eventually.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm no expert, but I have built several of these for my studio as well. The faced pieces will provide an increase in low frequency absorption, but will reflect some high frequencies. I used non faced material for all my absorbers, with the exception of the ones in corners. I used foil faced material on only the back piece (2"x2'x4')x2 The foil should faced material should face the wall. Without a doubt my room sounds 100% better now. I somewhat followed the plans illustrated here. http://www.pmerecords.com/Broadband.cfm

You already got the right answer. For more information (and the proof) see my Density Report:

If you can get 705 it works better. Or an even more nifty idea, put a layer of 703 on the outer most part of the panel, with 705 on the inside, then you get a nice balance of bass trapping and HF absorption.

I used the foil kind because that's all I could find out my way. I peeled it off of most of the panels, but left it on some for a variety. Here's some info and sound clips I put together of before and after making my own DIY traps. I'm really happy w/ mine.

Hey I'm bringing this one back...I'm finally getting around to improving my acoustics - I'm building some bass traps.

I have the frames underway, I'm looking for the best way to hold the Roxul into the frame (underneath the fabric) that doesn't cost a lot. I was pricing out screen today, and I was surprised at the price. Any alternatives to suggest?

cheers

When I get around to building mine, I thought about using the silver and blue grill cloth from Fender amps, or the salt and pepper Hiwatt style. It would be expensive as hell but would look super cool.

you need to get it shipped freight so buying it locally is a much better idea
