Thread Starter | Headphone monitoring question/advice?
what would be horrible about this? It's regarding a small Mackie or even Behringer mixer & monitoring 101 Okay Lynx Two A(4 ins/4 outs) * Mic - into my Pendulum Pre which has XLR & 1/4 inch outs(I'm assuming they both work simultaneously) * Pendulum Pre - XLR out into the Lynx Two A into the DAW * Pendulum - 1/4" out into a small mixer (inserts in or something?) * Lynx - 2 channels out from my DAW into my active Monitors * Lynx - 2 channels out from my DAW into 2 channels of the mixer. So essentially the mixer is just a glorified mo-me for headphone recording/monitoring (not monitoring speakers) Here's the question.......the only thing that a POS mixer is affecting is the heaphone cue mix right? Granted that's alot but if it's only for one person overdubbing they can deal with it. Is my logic flawed here & also open to any advice? Thanks.

that's exactly what those extra 1/4" outputs are for, so go ahead. your thinking is correct, the mixer is only in the headphone monitoring chain so it won't show up in your recordings or affect your mixing. gregoire del ubik |

I started out with a crapinger mixer, and the headphone jack sounded like it rolled off everything under 200Hz, and distorted everything above 200Hz Now if only i had recommendations for a good cheap headphone amp.... perhaps someone else will have an idea. good luck | |

Rane, OZ and Symetrics all make reasonably priced decent headphone amps - particularly if you can pick one up used or on e-bay. I believe OZ makes 4 and 6 user models, Symetrics makes 4 user model and Rane makes a 6 user model. Last I looked, the Rane provided the most control, but also was the most expensive of the group. A used one might run $180 or so on e-bay (I paid about that for one last year). A 4 user Symetrics older model would go for about $50 on e-bay (have one of those too) and an OZ 4 user model for about $100 (yup, got one of those also). Given the choice, I'd spring for the Rane but OZ has worked well for me (it's in my home rack while the Rane is in a coffehouse/studio rack). Others have mentioned Sampson here as an inexpensive choice, but I've never seen or used one.
