Thread Starter | Melodyne time correction workflow v. Elastic Time v.?
I'm looking at editing a lot of rhythm tracks for an album. Beat Detective is fine for the drums but for bass the Melodyne plugin seems the quickest way to move, time-stretch, and adjust amplitude of individual notes. Is there a more straight-forward way to do something similar? The Melodyne plugin is a little quirky to me and I've haven't found it to be very ergonomic yet. I could get used to it. Elastic Time can be OK for some things and I use it but I'm not sold on it for lots of small edits...also, X-Form can take a while to render. I'm also very fond of destructively (on a copied file) adjusting the volume of individual notes before automating; I simply find it more efficient this way. With Melodyne I can do this while fixing the timing very quickly. I don't know of another program that integrates these two functions–is there one? I'd prefer to keep this project in Pro Tools LE but I also have Reaper and Logic (although the Logic interface and workflow annoys me in general). Any thoughts on alternatives would be appreciated; also, if you've looked for an alternative for this only to stick with Melodyne, please speak up. Thanks! Grayson |

Hey Grayson! What's up man? It's Branson... Long time no talk! Are you editing time to a grid, or just tightening the bass up against unedited drums? I use the full Studio v3 or whatever it is for editing bass and guitars. It works out really well because you can view the kick and snare in the edit window of Melodyne. Makes workflow a lot faster and easier. I've tried using elastic time and pitch, but I find it too cumbersome to work with quickly. However, that's most likely because I'm used to the way Melodyne operates. My only problem with Melodyne is that I find myself using PT shortcuts (zooming, scrolling) and they don't work. Oh... You should put 4 MPC clicks at the head of the bass track before Melodyne, as I've noticed a little bit of latency when you record it onto a Post Melo audio track. Makes for easy and super accurate alignment. Just give Melodyne some time. Once you get used to it, you'll be able to fly around on it and make the process quicker. Hope all is well!!! |

Branson! I didn't recognize you from your avatar. Good to hear from you. Thanks for the response. It's a small world. So I suppose nothing else does quite the same thing as Melodyne and that's that. This is all to a grid. Fortunately, the guitars can be comped with only a little Elastic Time and the bass is only one track so I won't have to spring for the full version over the plugin. Do you ever use the plugin version for convenience over the full version? The plugin interface isn't as bad with the 1000 pixel window. The shortcut thing is a bummer. I very rarely do stuff that needs this much editing and really prefer not to, but...you know how it is. The latency was going to be my next question. Thanks for mentioning it. I am indeed doing well. I hope (and would expect) you are too! Thanks again. Grayson |
