Would I be taking 2 steps forward and 2 steps back?

I've got a limited budget for my next round of studio upgrades ( I work all ITB ). I'm thinking of getting a Manley Massive Passive but I need to upgrade my digital RME card for analog out. So I was thinking Motu's 896HD.

By passive my audio out of the Motu converters am I gonna be losing more than I'd make up with the Massive Passive?

why not just get 2 channels of sweet d/a, like the benchmark? why does the addition of the MP require all those extra ins and outs?

I don't really need ALL of those ins and outs. I do only need 2in and 2out that will convert via ADAT lightpipe. Any way I slice that pie though it'll cost about $2000+.

I could just:

keep my rig "as is" and get a pair or Adam S3a's
or
go the Massive Passive route with a new audio interface.
or maybe tag a Rosetta 200 onto my existing one.

I'd so much rather spend the money on fun stuff like a Smart C1 than AD/DA's.

I forgot to mention that I only currently have 1 in, via my digital option on my mic pre.

It's worth considering the E-Mu 1820M; the converters are really very good, and once you get throught the overcomplicated routing it's a great tool, and at very little money.
