I'd second the Drip LA2A. I brought a fully built v2 on Prodigy Pro and then built a v3 from scratch. I am a relative beginner and found it pretty easy as the documentation is so good.

I have a stack of DIY gear, JLM preamps, 1176's, LA2A's, G-SSL, Sontec and Trident EQ. I can't justify buying commercial gear when I can build something of equal quality for a fraction of the price! I don't get too hung up on it sounding identical to original units as long as they sound good in their own right.

to follow up briefly on the drip opto 4 which is the version 4 of his LA2A clone. At first I compared it to the 2-LA-2 because of the added option of fast or slow. However after a bit more research I found out that the 2-LA-2 doesn't have this option. It was removed just before release. apparently it was going to be controlled via tubes. the drip is controlled by having 2 different T4bs. Seems pretty cool to me. now I will have features that you cant even get in the real version!

anyways im pumped. payed for the board and 2 t4bs last night. Hope to have them in a few weeks so I can source the rest of the parts!

What's the difference between an LA-2 and an LA-2A. I only see an LA-2 circuit board on Drip's website.

But in general, what is the difference between the two?

Passive is well documented.

Easily soldered with
Multipurpose PC Board with 417 Holes - RadioShack.com

or
Universal Component PC Board with 780 Holes - RadioShack.com

Active takes a bit of design work.

I don't know for sure but I would guess he calls it LA2 so he isn't directly using the LA2A name like G-SSL for the Gyraf SSL or S800 for the Trident 80b EQ to avoid any potential trouble.

I cant say for sure because I haven't actually received the parts in the mail yet to start but from what I've been reading the drip stuff is perfect because he has a very very detailed manual and it looks like he puts a lot of care and thought into creating his boards.

Would love to hear some more clips of the DIY projects. I bet it is music to the ears.

I'm banging away on my first tune with the new stuff. I'm hoping to get my 1176 fixed soon enough to use it on some stuff at least on this one. But it's done via the SCA preamps and the LA-2A is used quite a lot. And my home made iso cab.

I just posted a new tune over in the showcase section:

New Song - The Moment

This is only my fifth song ever (writing, performance, or mixing, only the fourth singing I guess since one was instrumental), so it's obviously not the ultimate example. But it was done with the SCA pre-amps and the DIY LA-2A and the SSL bus comp. My 1176 wasn't ready in time.
