share vocal chains that rock!!

I find vocals chains so interesting. It's half science half art and half voodoo (I'm aware that equals %150... but that's the math of rock n' roll, no?).

Here's a chain that worked for me on a high tenor... a very slutty one too! A slutty chain that is, not a slutty tenor.

C12>Tubetech PM1A Pre>1176>ELOP>GML Eq (just cutting some lows and adding some air).

Please share yours!

Wunder CM7-GT to a Neve 1073 to an LA3A or 1176 usually rocks...

Considering the gear have at my place, it's usually one of these.
1. U87>Focusrite Red 6> Summit DCL-200>Distressor
2. U87>UA 610>Summit DCL-200> DBX 160VU
3. Blue Kiwi> Avalon 737>Distressor
I also mix and match with the rest of my mic collection once in a while.............. It all depends if I'm in an experimenting mood

Rode Classic II --> A-Designs Pacifica... nothing more needed. Killer, yet minimal vocal chain.

These are a few that i've done recently with great results. All were talented musicians, which obv goes a long way.

FWIW I experiment a lot.

For light female singer:

TLM103 --> Chandler TG Chan MkII w/EQ IN, 12k +2, Lo Cut 120 Hz --> Calrec RQD6400, 3:1, SLOW Attack (Button), Auto Release

indie rock guy:

SM7 --> ADM 780 (Similar to API) --> Orange County Stressor, 3:1, 2.5 MS Attack, Auto Release

jazz vox:

C414-XLII --> LA-610, Gain +5, High EQ +1.5 @ 10K, Comp IN, GR peaking at -5 on the meter

punk singer:

Heil PR30 --> Chandler TG Chan MkII w/ EQ In, +2 @ 12K, Low Cut 90 Hz --> Orange County VS-2, Auto Release, Contour IN, hitting -8 dB on the meter

It´s a simple, but reliable chain. And you won´t run out of auxiliaries that soon.

I've had some really nice results with this:

Female singer, sort of a Sass Jordan vibe. TLM 103 > Groove Tubes Vipre with the rise time set to slow to knock out the sibilance of the mic, into a Groove Tubes Glory Comp > CL-1B > Toft ATB for EQ

Very Sweet. Using the La2A for listen/mix.

I have about six favorite vocal mics that, for vocals, I plug into one of three different awesome preamps, then straight into the converters. Later, when I compress, I have about three favorite compressors to choose from. Every one of these chains "rocks".

Although I'm fairly satisfied with my vocal mics and preamps, and usually satisfied with my compressors, I wouldn't mind having a couple more flavors of compression. Or a nice EQ. Being a slut and all.

For the past 6 months I've been using this one:

SM7b -> Vintech x73 -> Purple MC77 -> Apogee Duet

I like the sound of it with my voice.

Here is a very short sample I did today. Mic was on flat EQ settings. Vintech EQ NOT engaged. MC77 set at 4:1 with Dr. Pepper settings.

Recorded into logic with no further processing except for a bit of reverb from Space Designer.

Please forgive the George Michael impersonation...just voice in a very bad untreated room...but you get the idea.

EV PL20 > GR MEV1 > Aphex Expressor

Hitting the GR input hard. Just a few db gain reduction on the Expressor.

This is working well for me. Through this chain is first time that I've ever liked the sound of my voice.

Great vocalist -> Telefunken Elam 251 (1959) -> Neve 31104 -> EAR 660 was the best I ever heard.

Repeat again with Telefunken U47.

Also.. Great vocalist -> Neumann M269c -> 31102 -> Ear 660

Or..

Good Vocalist -> Shure SM7 -> Any Decent pre -> Any graceful reasonably transparent limiter -> decent enough converter/tape will do the job.

The main thing is the performance..

I can think of many many situations where a Tele 251 of U47 just wouldn't be right.

I'd choose the Neve more often than not tho.

Ok, here's the one I use probably 90% of the time:

Peluso 2247SE -> BAE 1073 -> Purple MC77 -> DBX 160SL -> SPL De-Esser -> Lynx Aurora16 -> PT|HD at 24bit/96kHz

M149 > Martech MSS-10 > Lil Freq EQ > Distressor. Seems to work on just about everybody I try. Modulating the aggression of the Distressor impacts the feel quite a bit.
