Most colored mix buss compressor plugin?

Thinking perhaps API 2500? What about any of the 1176 or Fairchild emulations, or maybe the EMI TG12413? Anyone use these on mix buss sucessfully?

And for the love of all that is sacred and holy, please do not derail this thread with the "no plugin" crap. tutt

I have never used the EMT but I like all the others you listed. I don't think I'd call it colored but the Waves SSL is a solid choice on the mix buss, you can really squash the hell out of it.

My go to plug for colored mix
comp is usually the API. The EMI is extremely colored but a little bitchy to set up for the whole mix. I just tried the t-racks Fairchild and instantly fell in love with it. The Stillwell Rocket is also great. The style of music has a pretty strong influence on what I'll use.
Hope this helps

I've been using the Waves SSL Buss comp a lot lately and really love continuous soft-knee compression it gives, but I wouldn't call it colored though.

My colored option would have to be the Fairchild 670 plug and I absolutely love it on the Drum Buss or overheads, just recently got my hands on the JJP version but somehow couldn't get the same results?!

I've heard good things about the EMI but haven't had the chance to try it though. Any thoughts about that?!

Hope this helps!

Cheers

The EMI can be tricky, at least for me, because there isn't an input gain. So if you just want to take off a few dB on the bus, you have to lower the bus trim or gain down on an earlier plugin on your mix bus and usually to an extremely low level. I think the EMI is great on parallel drum compression, where you really have to squash it.

Maybe someone can explain a better way to set it up, because I've always wanted to try it.

Maybe not the most colored - but I think I know what you mean..

Check out the "Badbussmojo" from the wellspring that is Stillwell.

- Not technically a "compressor" proper - but it gives you more of something going out than you had going into it..

UAD SSL Bus Comp inserted after the URS Saturation (saturate to taste). The key is mixing through it from the start, not adding it later.

Get it, use it, love it!

Read this, slapped it over a mix and really had a hard time dialing in a good sound. The interface I disliked, but I guess it is free. Definitely coloured, and when it was really hit hard i noticed is sucked out a LOT of top end.

I usually don't do a lot of mix buss compression anyway. I usually just place a UAD Precision limiter over the buss with the input left at unity and threshold at 0.1dBu to prevent overs. It rarely yields any gain reduction.

A compressor is a "voltage turn it downer".
You can determine when it begins to turn it down and when it resumes from turning it down, even how quickly it does it's "turn it down" and by how much it turns it down so you can push more voltage into it to be turned down and then make up for gain lossed from turning it down.

Dude, thanks for this!!! I'm here buying plug-ins like crazy and this thing looks pretty damn cool. Ever try it on guitar? Is it CPU intensive? Is setting up the ratio easy? Does a little popup window come up showing where you are as you move the dial for the ratio?

Thanks!!

Waves v ersies compr.

The V series from Waves has great color but remember with on all analog emulations you need to pad the output so you don't over load the plug in. I use Pad at -10 db that way I can over drive the output on the plug ins like a real console and get that fuzz i need without over loading the plug in output.

It only takes 3 minutes to get it into your DAW, You're best to try it out for yourself.

Most of the UI features you are looking for (Pop-ups with knob values) are not there.

Ratio is ratio, it is not harder or easier than any other.
