I say if it can bring something to your sound or your production with good results, embrasse it. If you have a 100K worth of out board gear i can understand where you are coming from but for someone at the bottom of the lader like me, it's a great way to inject some saturation in a mix weather you like it or not

It is agood point after I demod the fairchild emulation of the JJP bundle again, at a friends place , I have to say.... not bad not bad ....
It has some nice saturation even if the compressor is not working hard.

This example shows me there is something going on in the next few years.
If they get it to sound more 3D as well .... we are there.

I guess the problem at the moment is that you would need endless IRs for every situation how HW could react.
They have not found a way yet to for this but I am sure they will find a new method that will do the trick.

BK mentiond on the "mastering forum" that with clean plug ins (like the waves ssl) they are very near to it.

For me I save in the meantime all my money for HW and just WAIT.

I am sure they can get so close that we will see a huge price drop in HW....
What would be areason to buy some HW as well!!!

So go ahead, play with your plugins, you may like the results. Just don't kid yourself that it sounds like tape, because it doesn't.

The OP never asked if saturation plug-ins could replace having good mics or being a decent engineer... never said he wanted a magic bullet or snake oil. He didn't even say he wanted specifically tape saturation. All he asked was if you played around with a saturation plug-in, and did you like it? But thanks for the essay on your opinions anyway. Everyone has 'em. And if you're tired of repeating your's, then please don't feel like you have to.

Oh, yeah... and did I mention?... I'm tired of posters whose input to a thread is berating the OP that they should've used the search function. Use the search function... you'll find that it's already been done many times before.

And to be on topic... I like URS and SPL saturation plugs.

Placebo effect.
It also seems like you have no idea what you're talking about.

Bullshit effect.

and I think if you're finding yourself recording bands with a tape deck and all analog "pro gear" (who says that?), I'm pretty sure you might know what you're doing, so you just might be able to make a good recording or two... MAYBE.

perhaps you've not been so fortunate?

I'll keep using the tools that have continued to make great records for the past 70 or 80 years and you can use the ones that have been making things sound like crap for the past decade.

PS: I love the sound of Vintage Warmer! The URS is also nice, just a little too subtle for everything, IMHO
