Every try this with drum room mics...

Hello Guys,

I have been coming here for a while, but this is my first post!

Here's the question... have you ever used figure 8 mics (ribbon, or condenser) as drum room mics, but positioned them with the null points facing the kit?

I haven't tried this yet, but my way of thinking is it could be damn cool since you would get more ambience and possibly have less phase problems with the cymbals etc. Possibly less smeary sounding?

Anyone try it? Is it any good?

Greg

That's my game. Although I haven't used a figure 8, just a pair of condensors XY aiming away from the kit. Sounds killer. Especially when you compress the snot out of them. (see signature)

Yes..Do it all the time with U48 in figure8 pattern and nuked with Distressor. Mic is facing corner of room higher up most of the time. Adds space to the drum mix.

cool cool... good to know I'm on the right track. I gotta try it.

I think my plan of attack is going to be a u47 3 feet in front of kick, then the figure 8's about 6 feet out, to the left and right with the nulls facing the kit.

Only thing I wonder is if I should use ribbons, or condensers... any of you guys have a preferance? About ribbons in the room - are they too dark? I have always used condensers (small omni, or large card). I usually don't have ribbons to use, but on my upcoming project I will.

Any info would be great. In the end I am going to let my ears decide, but I am just wondering what other engineers experiences have been.

Sometimes ribbons can be too dark but it really depends on the room and what you want to hear. If the room is super bright and the cymbals are washy then they might be perfect. But, if you want that kind of sound then you'll want a brighter mic. So, 'ya see...it depends. In general...I've found that ribbons facing away from the kit are too dark for my taste but well (sigh) it all depends LOL

All you need to make a record is a mic, some tape and maybe some bad reverb...

A good one to try is drum kit in the middle of the room w' a figure 8 mic on both sides of the kit facing front/back. The nulls point at the kit & you can get a huge room sound w'out any weird phasing.

I love M/S for room mics, in front of the kit about 8-12' .

Rode K2s have been great for me in this application.
