Faith Hill 'Cry' questions for bpatural Hey Brian, 'Cry' is one of my favorite tracks of all time. I saw the 'Single Slice' thing in ProAudio Review and a few video snippets off the enhanced cd but would love to know any more info you care to divulge about your and Marti's process in making the track. Also any info you have about what TLA had going on in the mix would be awesome. Thanks, Gary

The drums / strings / keys were tracked over at rumbo in the valley on their trident 80b. The setup for drums was (if I remember correctly) All Board Pres/Eqs Kick In-> D112-> DBX160 Kick Out-> 47fet->DBX 160x Snr Top-> 57->160 Snr Bot-> km84-> 160x Hat-> km84 OH-> u87s-> Distressors Toms-> 421s Room-> U67s-> Distressors The drums were all overdubbed to the track as Marti had already demoed up the song and tracked some of the vox in new york, so the whole time everyone was overdubbing to a mostly complete vocal take. Strings were also recorded @ rumbo with a quintet of 2 celli, 2 violins and a viola. spot mics were 87s, 67s with c24 as the close room and 414s as the far room. I think the c24 went to a gml pre and eq and everything else was through the board. The stings were arranged by Jim Cox who also did the B3 on the song. Gtrs were done by Marti and a friend of his who used to be in the band Brother Kane and just happened to be in town. The amps were some of the newer gibson combos and tracked at his home studio with 57s and one of those pod distortion pedals. The acoustic was one of the jumbo gibson ones and recorded with a c12vr through an isa110 to a distressor and overdubbed with some midi gtr notes as well. Vocals were started in NY and finished in Nashville @ ocean way. The chain was a c800->1073->1176. We also had a great background singer come in and do some harmonies there as well. Marti ended up keeping some of his original harmonies so in the end there were quite a few BGVs. Bass was done by Lee Sclar if I remember correctly. I don't remember the Bass, but it went into an avalon DI and a distressor. As far as mixing, TLA did it in Miami , so I didn't really get to see that part. He did a really great job though. I heard an all protools mix that someone else had done (maybe for europe?) and his was much warmer and more aggressive. Well, back to work now, but just ask if you have any other questions. -brian

Damn!! That sure covers it. Thanks man, great info. One more ultra nutty question: If you recall, did Vinny C. do those snare roll things in the 2nd verse 1 handed? I think I hear him staying on the hat throughout and his cross stick style of playing would certainly lend itself to pulling something like that off. Thanks again, Gary

| Lives for gear | Great album :) I'm really partial to the song "One". The production on that track is awesome, to say the least. Cry is a great song also.

I'm not sure how he played the roll. I'm not a drummer so I don't really notice the nuances of technique. I can say he did a fantastic job making the 6-8 feel really groove though. -brian
