Hello hello hello! Just a quick greeting first as, although I'v been using gearslutz as a non-member for a long time, this is my first post. My name is Jack Harris, I'm currently undertaking a composition degree at Dartington College of Arts, Devon, UK. My focus lies with Electronic Composition, and as such music technology is a big part of what I do---in fact I believe it to be an equal! My problem is this... You see I'm surrounded by studios all day long, have access to some really lovely gear, and will do for a very long time BUT I want to upgrade my home setup, i don't do alot of 'studio recording' to be honest, as most of my work involves field recording. But it would be nice to be able to wack a few tracks down when at home. Aha not another 'which is the best portable jibby jabby thingy bob that makes my music instantly amazing with no input from me thread' ! But don't fear not! See i'm looking at the Apogee duet, my only problem is the unbalanced outs! I recently purchased some Genelec 8030a's, which of course are balanced in... also the duet outputs at the -10 'consumer' level! Will this be a problem? Mismatched with the genies which i presume are desinged for +4 line level? Suggestions would be great! Cheers Guys and girls Jak |

A problem? Likely not, you can turn the inputs on the Genelec up higher also if it's needed. If anything, but the Duet from somebody who will take it back if the consumer level thing is an issue. War |

Thank you for your reply, maybe i'm getting something basic very wrong here so bear with me! The genelec is obviously a piece of pro gear so it's set to receive +4 level, yet the duet only puts out -10....so if i connect the duet to the genies won't the impedance be all mismatched? Meaning i would have to really wack the genelecs volume up, also increasing any noise? Also I was thnking about the unbalanced/balanced problem, i'v seen these (Neutrik - Audio - D Shape Adapters - NA2M-J-TX) by neutrik, any one used them, what's the effect on the quality of the signal if any (apart from of course becoming balanced!), audible effect that is! Thank you very much for all your help Jak |
