Weapons for recording great guitar sounds

What are some of your favorite tools and tricks for getting great guitar sounds recorded (pedals, amps. pres, mics, etc), taking for granted you've already got a good guitar player? Some of my fav tools:

Royer R-121
Bad Cat Mini Cat
API pres

What style music? Ive never had luck with the 609 silver alone, I will use it with a 421 every once in a while to add some hi end clarity.

I've used it with "post-rock" instumental, punk, metal, and some straight up rock stuff.

The only time I don't reaaaally like it is on clean guitar parts...and even then I still like it...just don't love it.

It is pretty special underneath a snare. If fact the other day, I did recorderman set up on drums and just mic'd the snare from underneath. Loved the end result. The OHs pick up the snare very well and then you can mix in a bit of the snare mic and it sounds bonerific. I don't know...always playing around with different set ups.

I've found that slapping a plumber's pipe gently into your hand whilst glaring at the guitar player helps them solo better.

Peterson VS-1 strobe tuner. the "tempered" GTR setting is great, esp for acoustics.

This sounds interesting. I have a Peterson Strobe Tuner as well, could you elaborate further about what could be done using the tempered GTR setting?

For me, it is always about getting it to sound good out in the room. If it sounds good standing in front of the amp, you are 80% there. I like two mics on the amp, a dynamic and condensor [usually a 57 and a KM 86], and I combine the two to taste and record on one track. Sometimes I'll run it through an La-3a.

Not sexy, but it works like a champ...

Cheers,
John

I really like using 2x12 cabs, I'm no a big 4X12 fan, they seem to have too open a sound for my taste. I pair up a 57 and a 121 on the front side and put a D112 or an E602 on the back of the cab. I'll use a condenser if the room is nice enough, and that is usually a KM86, an 87, or a U67 when available. These I always track separately and sum later, I don't like to make a balancing decision on the spot.

I always go direct as well with a Countryman or a Jensen so I have the option to use an amp modeling plug later if the situation calls for it. I am eagerly awaiting the Waves GTR, it is ideal for my current living arrangement, as my neighbors below me hate when I play guitar at 3 am.

Thanks for the link! thumbsup

I just checked and my Strobostomp was already set to GTR!

I guess that's why it made such a huge different when I switched over from the Boss TU-2.

Fatboy 3 channel head with Bogner 2 12 cab. I also split out to GT SE Speaker Emulator. Mics are usually 421, 57 and M201. I am going to pick up a royer 121 and a 609 this week.
