Samson C02 or SM57's for toms

I have a very nice sounding drum setup don with just 4 mcs. Kick / Snare / OH's. Really doesn't need anything else. But, I have a few more inputs available and was considering close(r) micing the toms 1 mic per pair of toms just for grins to see what happens. A 57 is the obvious choice but I think the Samson pencil mics would have better low end and better off axis sound.

Which would you pick and why?

I borrowed a pair of C02s to use as room mics recently. Prior to this they have been hardly used by the friend who owns it and never abused. To hear the capture properly, I turned the volume and noticed a low end rumbling noise and traced them to the mics themselves. At first I thought it was the behringer mixer I was using, but afterwards I switched to a Rane VP-12 and same thing happened. It seems to have something to do with phantom power you only hear the noise when it is switched on. Believe me, it is not a tiny microsopic hissing type of noise floor that we all have to live with using budget equipment, it is a noticeable electronic rumbling noise you will hear on quiet solo sources, and definitely will stick out if you compress the track you record through these. I hope the pair I have is defective, but just a caution. Check yours out before recording.

What kind of heads are on your toms? If they are coated and a bit dark sounding you can use the c02's to see if they add a bit of brightness and punch.

It sounds like the mics may have been defective. I used a pair of those for quite a while and they served me just fine, especially considering what I paid for them. I never had anything like you're describing with them.

As for which will work best, it's really gonna be a case of trying them both and going with the ones you like best.

Yeah, sound like those were defective. I have had mine for a while and haven't had any problems. I have just never tried them on drums
