How to Burn Mixes using Pro Tools Video – 5min.com

This video title sort of mislead me into thinking someone had rigged up a way to burn to CD from Pro Tools, so I checked it out. I kept waiting for some kind of epiphany moment in the end, but it never came!

My favorite line is "Very time efficient, minimum of wasted time with this tool." I love the confidence and tone in both their voices!

As a user and lover of Pro Tools, I, as well as many friends who use it, hate that there is no offline quick bounce. Gotta love sitting there through the whole mix to enjoy that minimum wasted time!

Cheers,

Swaff

Why would you ever, in a professional environment, want to bounce a mix without listening to it?

I am guessing this is a rhetorical question? Maybe not.

9 times out of 10 when I bounce, I have listened through several times and made adjustments before the bounce, and I would just rather do a quick bounce. Do you use Pro Tools? If so, surely you have been in a situation where you'd rather not sit there through 4-5 minutes to wait for a bounce? A couple examples:

1. You've sent rough mix mp3s to the client, and they replied back all is good to go for all the mixes. You now have to sit through about 40 minutes of bouncing again when creating the final mix wavs or aiffs.

2. You're at the end of the session, and the client wants a CD to take with them. You'd rather quick bounce and burn a CD, but you have to sit there through the whole thing and then burn the CD. Sometimes for several songs, not just one.

I never just pull up a session without having heard it several times and want to bounce without having heard the song. So no, I don't ever bounce without having listened. Don't get me wrong, I know that the function DOES have some good things to it, such as making you listen to the final output so you're sure the song arrangement/mix is goof from top to bottom. It's just a shame there isn't the quick bounce option for cases outside that specific situation.

I make my entire income off of using Pro Tools HD to record, edit, and mix music & audio for visual media.

Just because you have listened to playback multiple times does not mean it will bounce without error or clicks/pops.

It is imperative to listen to your bounces for any problems that may have happened during said bounce.

I personally get around this by this procedure:

When I am mixing I am always listening through a stereo audio track.

All my tracks eventually end up routing to a stereo aux and the output of this aux feeds a stereo audio track.

Once I get near the end of a mix I hit record and I am always recording updated versions of the mix as I make tweaks. I can then "punch in" changes over top of small sections that need small fader rides and what not.

Then, whenever I need to output something, I consolidate then export region as file.

Instantanous bounce ready to burn.

It probably will if it doesn't do it in real time, since the system can go as quickly or slowly as it needs to in order to mix and record it correctly.

For me, it really doesn't make a big difference, though, since I use auxiliary inputs for my Kontakt sounds, anyway, from another computer.

Probably is not good enough for major label work.

I am going to be listening to the mix down anyway before I send it off anyway... why not listen in real time while its happening?

I agree. I used the $35 version of Cakewalk music creator a couple years back before I had pro tools. The mixes always sounded different after being bounced then they did in cakewalk.

I make my entire income using Pro Tools, too. I guess you and I are blessed! I am aware of the methods you mention, but I appreciate you offering them up. Not quite the same as a quick bounce option, though, and printing the mix multiple times as well as punching in to print tweaks all through the process can eat up some major drive space and also make a session bog down. If you got a system that works for you, though, I say keep rocking it!

Anyways, I found the video pretty funny, but I do honor the fact that these guys are trying to help people out with Pro Tools.

Best,

Swaff
