<<<<New Gear Recomendations>>>>

Hey SLUTZ!
First things first... I play prog metal. I'm recording my band because I'm very very picky and an absolute perfectionist. Recording at a studio is too expensive to be as picky as I am. Here is what I have put together. Let me know if there is anything else you guys would recommend. Lets shoot for essentials (I'm already in debt). This is what I got:

MOTU 896HD
Yamaha MSP10'S
ART PRO
NEUMANN TLM 49
SONAR 7/NUENDO 3 (O LOT O PLUGINS)
TWO SM57's

Why do you have Sonar 7 and Nuendo 3? And IF you are, and it's only an IF, you are pirating these softwares and plugs please get legit and buy the software. There's plenty of great inexpensive options. Also unless you're a seasoned engineer, no matter how picky you are you still may not be happy with the results. You may track everything perfectly but mix is an artform in itself and takes a long time to get good at. At the very least consider taking what you track to a pro studio to get mixed. I also hope you have decent rooms or you might be very disappointed in the end result.

Not Tracking Drums

Does your room sound okay?

Not to be rude, but the perfectionist in you might be happier by going to a studio given your current setup and the fact that you are already in debt (aren't we all!). You could always do overdubs on your own dime to save cash, but leave the basic tracking and mixing to a pro room.

Best,
Chris

My Bad. I neglected to mention that I'm not tracking the drums at my studio. Just Bass, Vocals, and Guitar. And who in prog metal tracks live? Sorry I was kinda offended by the question.

what guitar/bass amps do you have?

you seem good to go as far as overdubbing goes.

You could probably use a better mic preamp but I think you could make a record with everything you have.

(drumagog might be a good plugin investment, too, depending on how you want to edit the drum sounds)

Send a message via AIM to musicmatt
scrap the TLM 49 and get a Shure SM7b (I own both).

Prepare for a long journey

You're not tracking the drums at your studio> Meaning the band isn't playing as a unit?

Feh!

Tubes

I hear a lot of people tell me that the ART PRO is great when you replace the Tubes. Any recomendations on affordable tubes?

I plan on doing just that. But first I need the music to be as accurate, tight and professional as possible. I'm not nearly good enough to mix my music.
